This is only of interest to those old birds because it has been many years liaoz.......long time ago (in the mid 90s) the westbound route used to cut through some construction area near Guilliemard Rd via one of those 'small roads'. I think it is only supposed to be temporary, but it was the case for such a long time that when the route was changed later on, I saw a driver went into that road by mistake and had to turn around. Anyone remembers the name of that road?
I think I know what you mean.
During the days of 197: Geylang Lorong 1 - Jurong, 197 went through a diversion near Kallang Gasworks.
On it's westbound route, it turned into a small road just before the Hindu temple along Kallang Road of which its remnants can still be seen. This small road went around the temple and the gasworks and onto a small makeshift bridge before meeting with Crawford Street. One had to turn right into Crawford and then left into North Bridge Road.

Ah yes, I do recall that it had something to do with the gas station. Maybe someone will know what happened to that construction site? Without an old street directory it's getting harder to remember the old route in that area since it was again changed drastically as a result of the neverending circle line construction.

If im not wrong, this was due to the merging with 41 rite?

Pretty long history, but I only have vague memories of this service amendment notice. So what happened later? Still dunno the name of the small road and what exactly was being constructed near the Indian temple.
Almost every service had a good memory in people whom took it frequently, however, i believe that 197 cannot perm those small roads due to torque of DDs
That Indian Temple is actually called Kallang Gasworks temple or something like that. It actually has the phrase "Kallang Gasworks" as part of its name if I am not wrong. I am fond for nostalgic places...a bit OT but when was Kallang Gasworks torn down?
I have fond memories of the North Bridge Road area as I spent my childhood there in the 1980s. What other buses plied that area during the 80s? I took a number of buses to and fro there but I forgot the numbers liao...

Not forgetting the Crawford St Terminal.
There was Sv 160 and Sv 181 plus Sv 150 too....
Refering to the 1985 Bus Guide, found out actually Crawford St got plenty of services in the 1980s...
1, 2, 3, 5, 11, 12, 13, 20, 28, 32, 33, 41, 44, 50, 51, 61, 62, 80, 82, 84, 90, 94, 100, 120, 133, 145, 147, 148, 150, 160, 181, 195, 197, 209
Whilst North Bridge Rd has services like...
2, 3, 5, 11, 12, 13, 28, 32, 33, 41, 44, 51, 61, 62, 81, 83, 84, 90, 100, 101, 103, 122, 124, 126, 130, 133, 134, 145, 147, 148, 150, 160, 161, 166, 167, 171, 173, 174, 181, 182, 195, 197, 209, 851
(note: not all service plies along Crawford St. 160, 161, 167, 181, 182, 851 were TIBS Services)
To XY: Sv 209 does terminate at Crawford St Terminal.
To Marco Simone: Kallang Gas Works ceased operations in 1998 and demolished a few months later.
I refer to the 1988 street directory, there were 6 roads branching off along the stretch of Kallang Rd between Sir Arthur's Bridge and Lavender Street/Crawford Street.
Padang Jeringau (still exists today)
Kampong Soo Poo
Kampong Bugis (still exists today)
Nam Lock Street
Sin Koh Street
Mill Lane
I remember back in the 80s there was a diversion when Crawford Street was closed. The diverted services used Kampong Bugis (based on my memory, I may be wrong) followed by a temporary bridge to get to North Bridge Rd and Beach Rd.

Kampong Bugis was used by Lavender Street services, ie 5, 145, 133, 133A, etc.
Buses from Geylang Road used the currently abandoned road (formerly known as Nam Lock Street) just before the temple (ie, one block before Kampong Bugis).
