Last week , i met an insurance agent. Before meeting him , i went for buddhist lessons. He then told me he has a friend into Soka Buddhism , in a slip of tongue , t told him Soka buddhism is not recognised by the buddhist community. Afraid that i may have got my facts wrongly , i then told him that i cant really remember liao.
If i am not wrong , Soka is not a recognised in Buddhism community. Need to verify on this ?
He then asked me if i can eat beef , i said " Can , i rarely eat beef ". He said " I thought buddhists are not able to take beef ? " I told him it is not compulsory and i did not take any vows. He looked a bit suprised and i didnt want to explain further , in case i explained the wrong stuff to him .
Is there a better way of explaining it to the public ?
i only know strict buddhists don't eat meat. because they don't want to participate in any way, the act of killing.

Yeah, Soka is not recognised in mainstream Buddhism. From what I know, they don't take Shakyamuni Buddha as Buddha in their three refuges, instead they treat Nichiren as Buddha, etc. They also pray for materialistic purposes and there is little emphasis on Dharma.
I also eat meat/beef but I try to avoid. Best of course is to be vegetarian but it's not a must in Buddhism. It is for the purpose of cultivating compassion.
wat is soka
ya lor, what is Soka Buddhism?
Check Wikipedia :p
Soka stands for "creating value " it started as an offshoot of Nichiren Shoshu which rejects the teaching of the Sensei of the Stone temple..It does not recognise Buddha Sakyamuni and it incorporates alot of new age ideas which is totally different from Buddhism
Practise :emphasis on the reciting Sutra title and the judging of inferior and superior chapters of the Lotus Sutra
Refuses alignment with the sangha ,and no monastic order
Take refuge in a western coat layman called Daiseki Ikeda and His descendant
Actively involved in National Day Parade in Singapore to spread their ideas
Teachings based on Japanese Social Order and fundings to Japanese only religious party ,Kaimingto
Sources based from Ven Tsang Hui on "the Truth of Nichiren Buddhism and Soka "
Dear knightlll,
It is good to know what Dharma is all about. Here is a site with audio lectures on Theravada Buddhism that I wish to recommend:
http://www.buddhanet.net/audio-lectures.htm
Another reference that I usually follow is a set of compiled teachings by Ajahn Chah at:
http://www.ajahnchah.org/book/index.php
Lastly, I became interested in Buddhism initially because of the teachings of Master Seung Sahn which could be found at:
http://www.kwanumzen.com/misc/article-index-by-teacher.html#dssn
I feel that we do not need to convince the person but to advise him/her to find out for himself/herself. Thanks!
Cheers,
Wen Shih

Hi Display Name,
Thanks for your enquiry.
Yes, we do regard Him as the founder of Buddhism. In fact, we regard Lord Sakyamuni Buddha as the Eternal Buddha as reveal from Chapter 16 of the Lotus Sutra.
Our meaning of the Triple Gems / 3 Treasures (San Bao) as follows:
- Buddha: The Eternal Sakyamuni Buddha
- Dhamma: The Mahayana Tripitaka with mainly based on the Lotus Sutra
- Sangha: Nichiren Shonin, the monastics & the lay practitioners

From Nichiren Buddhism:
Dear all,
Nichiren Buddhism has been in the mainstream Buddhist circle as
seen in the website of Japan Buddhist Federation (http://www.jbf.ne.jp/)
where Nichiren Buddhist schools are members with exception to
Nichiren Shoshu & Soka Gakkai.
Probably what needs to be banned from this forum is actually
"Nichirenism". Well, I'll make a summary explanation of this.
In Japan, Buddhism is almost exclusively of the Northern tradition
(Mahayana). The lineages are mainly from Tiendai (Tien-tai),
Shingon, Jodo (Pure Land), Zen, Nichiren & Nara schools. Due to
the sectarian nature of Japanese Buddhism, each lineage consists of
subsects together with the main sect.
For Nichiren Buddhism, the main sect will be Nichiren Shu with
subsects such as Kempon Hokke Shu, Honmon Butsuryu Shu, Honmon
Hokke Shu & 3 offshoots of Hokke Shu. There are 2 sects that
advocates "Nichirenism" instead & they are Honmon Shoshu,
Nichiren Shoshu & its one-time lay organisation Soka
Gakkai.
Here's the brief difference between Nichiren Shu, Nichiren Shoshu
& Soka Gakkai:
3 Treasures of Buddhism
- Buddha
- Dhamma
- Sangha
1) Nichiren Shu
- Buddha : Eternal Sakyamuni Buddha
- Dhamma : Mahayana Tripitaka with the Lotus Sutra as base, Namu
Myoho Renge Kyo
- Sangha : Nichiren Shonin (with the monastics & lay
community)
2) Nichiren Shoshu
- Buddha : Nichiren Daishonin
- Dhamma : The Lotus Sutra, Nam Myoho Rengo Kyo (with emphasize on
the Goshos)
- Sangha : Nikko Shonin & successive High Priests
3) Soka Gakkai [2 types]
{A} Official
- Buddha : Nichiren Daishonin
- Dhamma : The Lotus Sutra, Nam Myoho Rengo Kyo (with emphasize on
the Goshos)
- Sangha : Nikko Shonin
{B} In Reality
- Buddha : President Daisaku Ikeda
- Dhamma : Writings & Teachings of the President & Soka
Gakkai
- Sangha : Soka Gakkai organisation & members
Reason for stating the above 3 organisations is that they are more
known thru out the world & are ones with branches in
Singapore.

Homage to the Original Teacher Lord Sakyamuni Buddha ![]()
