Getting infected with HIV is not a death sentence in that it can be controlled.
Unfortunately, there are many medications to take and comes up to thousands of dollars a month - equal to dialysis treatments probably.
When I was in Medical residency in the US in early 2001, there were many patients suffering the complications of HIV infection which is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, particularly opportunistic infections - PCP, Toxoplasma, etc. all fairly easily controlled with antibiotic prophylaxis.
With the advent of HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy), I saw the number of such cases fall rapidly over 3 years.
The medical center I worked in was a major NIH-funded HIV research center. Most patients will have medications funded by private health insurance, medicare, or medicaid (for very poor or disabled). Also, because it was a major research center, many drugs companies would be performing clinical trials and thus, many medications would be funded through them. Therefore, there was NO-ONE who had HIV infection who could not get treatment!!!
That aside, EDUCATION on unprotected sex, barrier methods of contraception are needed to halt the spread of disease.
Also, better funding of HIV treatment is required, with better health insurance coverage or funding sources so that Singaporean patients can also enjoy medical care that equals those enjoyed by citizens of other industrialized societies. Once the drug companies know that there's money to be made (ie, people will pay for treatment); more money gets poured into research, and then more gets funded for studies, especially in Singapore, and ultimately, Singaporeans benefit. -
How can the Aids message get more effective?
Many people still believe myths about virgins, younger girls, social circle and etc...
Ask around, No One, especially teens actually believe they will get Aids.
I think at the end of the day, people make their choices about their bodies, then they had to also bear the consequence of their actions and not always reach out their hand for more donations to fix issues they created on themselves in the first place. -

I dun believe i will get aids too but... but not through the mainstream in which aids spreads.. i believe the odds of geting aids are relatively low if u r aware of wat u r doing and wat ur partner(s) have been doing.... -
True that teenagers are indeed sexually active, but u can't attribute this rise in AIDS cases due to western influences and the openess of society. Its a myopic statement. True enuff... media does have a part to plae in spreading sex ard society .. but if one have strong morale values as to be able to differentiate wats right and wats wrong, y bother to be afraid that he/she will be promiscuous. Girls should really think thrice if not twice about giving in to their boyfriends' raging hormones. Every girls have the right to say no and should say yes ONLY IF YOU DO REALLY KNOW ABOUT YOUR PARTNERS' PAST SEX LIVES.
If girls don't learn to protect themselves, who else will? Relationship do not equate to sex. Guys should be gentlemen enough not to force yourself onto your girlfriend if you do really love her. Respect her dignity. It is even worse when guys are not honest to their girlfriends!! I suppose this should be a warning signal going out to all girls out there. DON'T JEOPARDISE YOUR FUTURE. -

When pharmaceutical companies run trials, one or two centres in asia would be enough to collect data for the asian population. As for the anti-retrovirals, that's why the government cannot allow parallel imports of these drugs. Patients can go and purchase them in Thailand on their own. When asked why the government would not subsidize these expensive drugs, the Minister replied that no subsidy will make the drugs as cheap as those in Thailand. He added in a cryptic tone, "Singaporeans know what to do.."
The government cannot officially sanction the parallel import of cheap anti-retrovirals without infringing patent rights...but citizens can buy them from Thailand on a private basis. -

Due to the influence of the american pop culture. Sex is deem to be a pleasurable form of exercise to many young brats. Love is no longer something that truly can last forever but girls are always so gullible to believe that their first true love will always be their one and only. When the tast the scare fruit they might be addicted to it. Western influence help to convince the girl that sex is nothing just pleasurable, this give them an excuse to caryy out their activities.
Truly the boys are to be blame too. The concept of love and BGR have chged so much from the believe that if u love someone u are deem to shield the person frm harm and misery ,just like how a mother protect her child, always and forever to something in which they let their homones control and guide them on their way of showing love. Worst some are into the relationship simply the get a tast of the first fruit.
Why have the thinking of both sexes change? The way in which the child is brought up plays an important role. In ancient china moral education come first compare to the learning of practical subjects(science). The first book they are taught are things like Dao de jin (a book of moral codes and condect). The society emphasis the difference between men and women. Most importantly there are harsh law that punishes ppl who are not married and have sex. The people do not just frown upon such actions, some even took matters into their own hands. But now, after modernisation thinkings change, perspective change, education chage, surely sexual patterns are expected to change too.
Inculcating strong morals value is the way to go to prevent the outspread of STD. The mindset of saving the first shld be welcome back if STD is to stop its spread. But i will be practical such a scenario is hard to come by again. I propose the teaching of Dao De Jin at a young age. Dao De Jin will surely complement the sex education in later years.
