blame mediacock, blame parents for not injecting right values...Originally posted by kenshin_himura:i feel sad for that gal.... seriously.. wat is the world coming to? 10 yr old kids kena STI... 40 plus cases of HIV positive teenagers aged 19 and below... u dun get that much cases in the past...maybe teenagers nowadaes are weak minded that they fall into the abyss easily?? Is sex that tempting?? I guess the onli defence against such lusts is exactly wat that is lacking in the lives of the new generation of sg - strong moral values...and the will to stick to ur principles of not having sex/praticing safe sex. Seriously, i hope that this news would serve as a warning to all couples that ur partners could very well be hiding the truth from u... The world is changing, from a moral stand point, for the worse.

This is due to society more open and western influences.
Ya!! working in medicine is fun ...Originally posted by An0nym0us:Hey Dogtor, your life is pretty interesting huh, working in the medical field and all.
Singaporeans can have access to low-cost anti-retroviral drugs from Thailand...Action for Aids can facilitate the purchase...As for clinical trials, pharmaceutical companies would rather hold it in Thailand, where there is a far larger number of HIV infected patients.Originally posted by Dogtor:Folks just to update.
Getting infected with HIV is not a death sentence in that it can be controlled.
Unfortunately, there are many medications to take and comes up to thousands of dollars a month - equal to dialysis treatments probably.
When I was in Medical residency in the US in early 2001, there were many patients suffering the complications of HIV infection which is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, particularly opportunistic infections - PCP, Toxoplasma, etc. all fairly easily controlled with antibiotic prophylaxis.
With the advent of HAART (Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy), I saw the number of such cases fall rapidly over 3 years.
The medical center I worked in was a major NIH-funded HIV research center. Most patients will have medications funded by private health insurance, medicare, or medicaid (for very poor or disabled). Also, because it was a major research center, many drugs companies would be performing clinical trials and thus, many medications would be funded through them. Therefore, there was NO-ONE who had HIV infection who could not get treatment!!!
That aside, EDUCATION on unprotected sex, barrier methods of contraception are needed to halt the spread of disease.
Also, better funding of HIV treatment is required, with better health insurance coverage or funding sources so that Singaporean patients can also enjoy medical care that equals those enjoyed by citizens of other industrialized societies. Once the drug companies know that there's money to be made (ie, people will pay for treatment); more money gets poured into research, and then more gets funded for studies, especially in Singapore, and ultimately, Singaporeans benefit.
"Many people still believe myths about virgins, younger girls, social circle and etc.."?? wat myths are those u were referring to?Originally posted by mistyblue:How can the Aids message get more effective?
Many people still believe myths about virgins, younger girls, social circle and etc...
Ask around, No One, especially teens actually believe they will get Aids.
I think at the end of the day, people make their choices about their bodies, then they had to also bear the consequence of their actions and not always reach out their hand for more donations to fix issues they created on themselves in the first place.
True that teenagers are indeed sexually active, but u can't attribute this rise in AIDS cases due to western influences and the openess of society. Its a myopic statement. True enuff... media does have a part to plae in spreading sex ard society .. but if one have strong morale values as to be able to differentiate wats right and wats wrong, y bother to be afraid that he/she will be promiscuous. Its up to one define wat sex is to them, either as just the physical interacttion of 2 pple, or the sacred act at which 2 pple bond physically and emotionally=> getting married bah. i am quite a conservative guy with raging hormones, but i admit having morale values strong enough to fend against such temptations.Originally posted by Urroh:Cant blame any body if teenagers are sexually active. If girls don't learn to protect themselves, who else will? Relationship do not equate to sex. Guys should be gentlemen enough not to force yourself onto your girlfriend if you do really love her. Respect her dignity. It is even worse when guys are not honest to their girlfriends!! I suppose this should be a warning signal going out to all girls out there. DON'T JEOPARDISE YOUR FUTURE.
Yes, you are right, but the crux nowadays is to be able to have multi-national, multi-center trials - so that results can be generalizable.Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Singaporeans can have access to low-cost anti-retroviral drugs from Thailand...Action for Aids can facilitate the purchase...As for clinical trials, pharmaceutical companies would rather hold it in Thailand, where there is a far larger number of HIV infected patients.
When pharmaceutical companies run trials, one or two centres in asia would be enough to collect data for the asian population. The case load in Singapore is not big enough...I would rather conduct the study in Thailand and/or Cambodia.Originally posted by Dogtor:Yes, you are right, but the crux nowadays is to be able to have multi-national, multi-center trials - so that results can be generalizable.
Of course, its like many times up in complexity.
Low-cost retrovirals ----> ? are they in violation of our IP agreements with the USA????
