Maybe LaVey's Satanism is not the most popular choice but I don't recall Satanism saying we have to go with the rest of the pack blindly just because others are doing so. Maybe u're the one who has to stop following the blatent and accept unpopular choices. -
Unpopular doesn't mean it's not the right one... Cults like alien cults etc are also quite popular. Many people mass sucide because of it! But is it right? New age thinking is new age thinking... It doesn't represent the traditional thinking or defies the right sets of value then it is not what it supposed to be. Just like why falungong is not mainstream buddhist? They are very popular too... Popular doesn't mean it is the right one!

Regarding this issue yes there is. In Christianity there is the church council... deviants had appear as early as the first century... but the joint body of Christ will often come together in listing what is right and wrong... There is a certain sets of beliefs which Christians should abided to ... to be so called Christians...(Although spiritually it takes more) ANyway from what you said... you are just trying to says that there are many satanism in the satanism... and the satanism you are talking about is different from mine... -

The is no point to debate on the notion of 'religion' or 'cult' because such terms are created by the idealistic government in establishment of politics and orderation within the society.
Because the Parliaments and Ministries need to keep track of people and their habits, that it why classification of 'religions', 'cults', and branches of this and that beliefs are introduced. The purpose is to classify and orderate. -
