Billie Holiday is "out of my depth" - as I find her style to be very loud and my ears get tired with those kind of loud American jazz.
I prefer the soft, low, quiet "night club" jazz, as well as the happy Cuban style jazz, and the Brazilian style jazz.
Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz are the evergreen favorites.
Best loved tune is the "Harlem Norcturne" played on a low saxophone - which somehow is about the best jazz instrument, with the flute, piano and double bass, and drums - in this order. -

Hmm....i guess i don't really have good impression on those greatly commercialised jazz artiste.
I tend to favor jazz artiste like Stacy Kent or True Dave Story.
Diana Krall and Norah Jones is a turn off to me.

Bossa Novas are good after a stressful day, or when you want to relax and get away from some bruising computer games.
To be fair, most jazz artistes will have to make a living, at the end of it all, it has to be commercial.
However, the style of each individual singers will show each person's interpretation of some old songs, or their attempts to transport you to another world. Their success will depend on people like us, who will have our own inclinations.
Personally, I would prefer to enjoy the style of most lady singers, as I find their voice more soothing. Amongst the male singers, I find Tony Benetts and Ron Kaplan voices to be good too.
Stacey Kent has a nice style, much like Sheena Easton effort, as well as that of Dianna Krall, but a little different from Laura Fyggi.

I think Jazz singers are not as over-publicized as their pop and rock counterparts.. in hindsight, they live up to their name with their singing abilities and class.. Stacy Kent to me has a confident style of singing that reeks of style.. Cool singer.
Any of you listen to Wynton Marsalis..I haven't begun to fully appreciate his music.. but I think he's good.. master of trumpets.. -
Actually i would think that Miles Davis is much more a master of the horn then Marsalis (less Dizzy). True enough that marsalis has all the chops and virtuosity. But most modern jazz musos have this platform due to the creativity and innovation of the past greats.
Davis was a true genius, innovator. He's evolvement from Bebop to the creation of Modal Jazz to Cool to Fusion. Something modern jazz musos can't replicate. Although once u get into Bebop, you will realise that vituositically, Davis is not in the same league as Dizzy.
Anyway, just my two cents worth. -

Yea, Pastorius rules. Loved his stuff on weather report. But the shit on his solo albums really take the cake. Too bad about dying young though. Another bassist i reckon is Victor Wooten. Man, this guy kills! Brings technical and moving playing to another level.
Being a guitarist, obviously my tendencies would swerve to guitarists. Methany's cool. Tks for the recommends anyway. Will keep a look out. -

I totally agree that Dennis Chambers rules. However, i believe Tony Royston Jr will kick his ass soon. Saw a video of him when he was 14 pulling off rolls and chops that would make many a pro drummer feel ashamed. That guy is just totally insane. He is touted as the next chambers with even more shit goin on.
I guess for keyboardist, i can't go away from Chick Corea. That guy is just simply amazing. Phrasing and melody. Technicality wise, Jordan Rudess. Graduated from Juiliard at 18 with World Class Pianist Honours. Enough said. heh
My influences are mainly progressive rock bands. John Petrucci and Michael Romeo. Dream Theater and Symphony X respectively. Simply amazing. Jazz musos would defintely be George Benson, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Frank Gambale and Al DiMeola. These guys just kick ass man. No lame Shit.
