Maths teacher admits to sex with student, 14
Relationship lasted 14 months, during which he wed steady girlfriend and had sex with woman he met on the Net
By Selina Lum
LESS than two months after he was assigned to her Secondary 2 class, a mathematics teacher, 26, started courting his 14-year-old student.
On Valentine's Day 2002, he sent her flowers and jewellery. The next month, she agreed to be his girlfriend.
Over 14 months, from May 2002 to July last year, he had sex with her on 18 occasions - 16 times in hotel rooms and twice in the front seat of his car at a park.
In the middle of the affair, in December 2002, he married his steady girlfriend, a primary school teacher, but carried on with the teenager.
He was also having sex with a woman he met via the Internet.
Yesterday, the bespectacled man, now 27, pleaded guilty in a district court to five charges of having sex with a minor.
He faces up to
five years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000 on each charge.Thirteen similar charges will be considered when he is sentenced next Wednesday.
The court ordered the media not to publish the names or photographs of the teacher and the student.
The affair came to light last July after the girl's father read an SMS on her mobile phone which said she might be pregnant.
When confronted, the teenager pleaded with her father not to go to the police.
Her parents took her to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for a check-up and the police were called in after the girl revealed she had had sex with her teacher.
The teacher turned up at the hospital and apologised to the girl's father, who told him the matter was out of his hands.
The accused then went home and confessed the affair to his wife.
It turned out the girl was not pregnant after all.
The court heard the teacher had started to woo the girl after he got close to her while giving remedial tuition at the school in the western part of Singapore.
In April 2002, they started kissing and hugging in a park. They had sex for the first time at Rasa Sentosa Resort on May 31.
The girl lied to her parents that she was attending a school camp.
Subsequently, they had sex either at a hotel or in his car, including on Valentine's Day last year, after which he bought her dinner and roses.
Yesterday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor'ashikin Samdin urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
The accused, she said, had abused his position of trust to satisfy his lust. He initiated the relationship, took advantage of the girl's age and exposed her to an unhealthy lifestyle, said the DPP.
Defence lawyer Wong Siew Hong said his client had been clinically depressed at the time due to work stress.
However, he had felt a sense of achievement with the girl. He had helped improve her grades and needed her around to affirm his self-worth.
This was not a case of a lecherous adult picking up young girls on the Internet, said the lawyer,
who asked that his client not be jailed for more than two years.------------------------------------------------------------------------------
