maybe the school is doing it for fame? The so-called 'good' schools will avoid this kind of negative publicity. The principal might have tot that by reporting the incident to the police, she is establishing the school to be a strict and proper place, and strict parents will want to send their kids there....

oversight and neglected my a$$, i think they did it purposely. Only when something serious happen then they use terms like those.
IMO, the Principal should at least pay the medical bills of the student herself to show that she admits her mistakes.
A letter of apology to the parents isnt asking too much of her too.
something to add... now that the whole world knows that this boy is sick and is caught watching porn[taboo], pple/fellow students/friends might start to look at him in a different way..

Read the newpaper dated 11 feb 2004. The police are still deciding whether to charge that kid.
If they charge him, would it seem like a big hoo-ha?
If they dun charge him, it would seem kinda lenient and there maybe more cases sprouting out down the line. -

5. —(1) A person shall be guilty of an offence if, being a person who has the custody, charge or care of a child or young person, he ill-treats the child or young person or causes, procures or knowingly permits the child or young person to be ill-treated by any other person.

(2) For the purposes of this Act, a person ill-treats a child or young person if that person, being a person who has the custody, charge or care of the child or young person —
(a) subjects the child or young person to physical or sexual abuse;

I wonder MOE has any strict guidelines or regulations on what is permissible punishment, and whether the educators/teachers are taught/updated/reminded to differentiate between PUNISHMENT & TORTURE/ABUSE/"Sadistic Act". If there is none, I will have concern.
Another issue is whether every school or MOE has any system or personnel to check or remind the PUNISHER if he/she "cross the line". Any recording and auditing on such incidents happen in our schools. All these refers to accountability should anything and "unknown".
Maybe someone here who knows would like to highlight.
P.S: We don't always wait for things to happen, and then try to remedy/"cure" it. By then, it may be too late. -

After following the news for 2 days and finishing reading all the replies, I felt that it is clear that it's the school's fault.
Firstly, the principal said that the police was alerted after the boy felt ill. But why are the parents only contacted after the police arrived? Shouldn't the parents be notified immediately upon catching the student red-handed?
Secondly, if you could still remember a while ago, when our dearest MP Steve Chia was caught with having porn in his PC, he was let off with a warning letter. So, i was wondering shouldn't this boy be discharged and be sent for some counselling? In my opinion, he is just a growing-up kid(minor). Who in this forum haven't really viewed porn (in any sorts) before?
This incident happened to my ex-secondary school before. The only difference is that our vice-principal took another alternative to solve this problem. He wanted this guy to surrender all his VCDs and send him for counselling. Year later, now this guy ( a good friend of mine) is a fine young lad. I wonder how would this Kent Ridge principal command respect from her students after this incident. -

eg.
1. could the VCD guy have challenged the principal in making a police report? or he was a violent guy, esp in front of his gang? the 17 guys are some sort of bad gangsters afterall?
2. could it be these pple already established channel or networks to sell or distribute porn? to alot of other naive pple already? so much that it warrants the attention of the authority?
3. could the sick guy feigned sickness in wanting to retaliate? newspaper said he was only under observation? what is 7 hours without food? other pple have done that for days.
etc etc...
you never know what students can come out with all sorts of pattern nowadays.
again not trying to defend the school, but trying to find logic in the drastic actions. -
Maybe we should ask the Principal:
- Is this the way to Punish your kid if u have one with the same scenario?
- What is the purpose/intent of meting out the punishment and is this appropriate?
- Will the kid learn anything or get educated or understand from this punishment?
- Will you call the police if the kid is your own child or will you give him/her a chance?
I don't think the public or most ppl is agreeable with the way the school handle the issue. Simply no heart! -

Actually, 17 students is about all the boys in the class. My guess is that the teachers summoned all the boys of the class to write a testimony whether they are guilty or not.
