It should be optional for both boys and girls to do NS, full scale military and not just that nursing crap. That way there is a larger pool of potential recruits than at the moment where only boys are allowed. That will relieve the pressure on only having males defend the country. I mean, what if Singapore is attacked and all the males are dead, who is going to defend the country then? Women must learn to fight too!Originally posted by Ayukat:2 or 3 years is just what I need, I am only 16 years old you see.![]()

But seriously, through the course of NS, its not really much of character building. I feel like I've been much more slacky after NS. Got chance to loaf then grab the chance to loaf away. But well, you DO learn other stuff nontheless, not very useful in real life though![]()
The gals already are at a disadvantage.Originally posted by Ayukat:What about the girls? Don't need to repay?
me paying tax. received the letter for weeks but haf been sitting on it.Originally posted by :The gals already are at a disadvantage.
1) When a guy and girl start working at a similar job, the guy is usually paid higher.
2) In terms of tax benefits, an active reservist gets $3000 tax deductible from his income tax.
3) Currently, only a guy can sponser citizenship for his foreign spouse. A sg girl's foreign husband will not be granted a citizenship.
Btw, how many of you pay income tax? I dread the month of March... all the bills to settle
Haha... am looking into more tax incentives like a SRS account... but kinda leh chey of setting one up. Though you can save up to $3000 in taxes if you contribute $15000 to your SRS account each year.Originally posted by wuming78:me paying tax. received the letter for weeks but haf been sitting on it.![]()
Then with this incentives they give the excuse of asking us go back do reservist. See what I mean?Originally posted by :The gals already are at a disadvantage.

Most of the most advanced and civilised countries in the world have done away with forced conscription, which is a throwback to the dark ages. Singapore is still a long way to being truly civilised. Still afraid that Malaysia or Indonesia will attack us if we don't pretend to have a strong military.Originally posted by Ayukat:SmallPanda just gave me another good reason. technology? like wat?Originally posted by Ayukat:Technology will take over, there is no need for so much manpower.
I should have been clearer. What I meant is to have a professional military rather than a forced conscript one. Like the US. Raising salaries and other incentives will take care of any lack of supply. Just look around the world, countries are increasingly building professional well trained militaries that are much better than conscripts.Originally posted by BrUtUs:if u make it optional, can u get the minimum amount of soldiers required in force? r u sure our neighbours or terrorist wun attack us? can we take the risk? when u hv no security nobody will come here to invest...
