I think such feelings are quite important especially when after the true confession, the gal rejected the guy, but at least if both sides can manage to keep the friendship feelings intact, there may be still chance for the relationship to go a bit deeper.
Telling the gal too fast especially when she is not ready or the trust not developed yet may cause the gal to shun you real quick. -
