I'm appalled by the fact that they burn our flag, but I am saying that our politicians are no angels too.We cannot be blinded to the gaffes that we have done, firstly we go to Taiwan, ostensibly in private but with a public agenda, then we suck up to China in front of the General Assembly. When a man says one thing and does another, we call him a liar. When a country does the same, we call it statecraft. No wonder the Taiwanese are feeling aggreived.Imagine having a relation iwth a nation since the latter's independance, letting the latter troops train on our own soil for decades, then having these same fellows denigrate you in front of the global community.Look at it objectively,we should have expected this earlier. But if a war would break out I sincerely hope we can put blind economic greed aside and stand beside a nation which has helped us since independance when no one else would. Many other nations would do the same I'm sure. They just can not say it out right now.
Good points and noted. Totally agree with the fact that our politicians are no angels and should be more sensitive and diplomatic, a modified Swiss like approach maybe.
You are right, it is a due to economic greed now that I think about it, but I can't help but think economic stability plays a big part towards social, political and thus National security. With no hinterland nor resources aside from our people, playing the 'regional game' takes a great importance.
All said, our politicians should thread the line a little closer and remember as you so rightly pointed out that Taiwan has 'been in our corner' for a long time.
