According to one of my friends who is currently working in Microsoft, the update file requires original CD Key and registered version of Windows. If the file detects it is a pirated version then the Entry Point will be lost and you will never go into your Windows when the next time you restart. So becareful when Windows asks you to update your Windows, it is a trick to punish those who are not using original Windows.
Bro, have you installed in yet or all the stuff just "hear say"?
1. I have installed on a number of my friends PC and was never asked for the Original CDs.
2) I have installed on my office PCs and never had problems yet.
3) Both my home PCs are installed with SP2 and never have encountered any problems both with online gaming or applications.
Unless you are referring to SP2 turning on Firewall by default (if you do not have one installed) which "blocks" ya games and appz from accessing the net.
This can be easy change by enabling those games or appz or better yet, install Zonealarm.

I dun quite see it as a punishment unlike that the author said. MS is trying to beef up their security and from using it for a while i notice that one very USEFUL change is that all ActiveX does not install unless you Explicitly instruct it too.
This will prevent tons of stuff ranging from Spyware and pesky stuff you never asked for.
Overall, I find SP2 highly useful and a step forward in their quest for better secured OS. (BTW: I am not implying that the OS is highly secure).
I am not working for MS but I think before anyone start slaming them with their security efforts, at least try it before you talk.
I rest my case.
Note: I am not sure how this is related to Bar forum at all.
