I live in Toa Payoh. I was afraid that there may be midnight surchages so we decided to take 966 back to Toa Payoh instead of taking the cab directly back.Originally posted by 105090:Since you stayed at Woodlands, you tend to be a bit disadvantaged because of the close proximity to Johor.
Since you are going Senai, tell you some flight info from AirAsia:
Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Penang, Sibu, Tawau, Kota Bahru, Ipoh, Sandakan, Bangkok.
MAS operates mainly to KL only .
And if you want cheap tickets, better book 2 months in advance, if not, might as well fly from Changi. And oh.. if you return via Causeway, cannot buy Duty Free items like alcohol back.. this happened to me once..
its always better to negotiate/agree on the price first.Originally posted by TIB529A:I live in Toa Payoh. I was afraid that there may be midnight surchages so we decided to take 966 back to Toa Payoh instead of taking the cab directly back.

Does HK have any CNG taxis like what we have in Singapore?Originally posted by art0925:haha, thanks, Also, as I've talk to a sales person for Toyota Macau, they said the Corolla are the same spec as the Singapore STTA once, which is 200XLI Diesels, and also, the Liteace are the same as the yellowcab once...But the mercedes are little different..They are the Vito 115cdi (Which in Hong Kong are only sold as a panel van with 5 seats).
Also, the reason for Macau to introduce these new taxi type is because of the Hong Kong taxi Changed to use LPG, (which means the excess unsold cabs cannot be shipped to Macau (as Macau has no LPG station) therefore, Inchape decided to sale 4 seaters corolla instead (smaller size so it will fit the market better..) and for a while there are more 4 seaters then 5 seaters (mostly mid to late 90's Cedric unsold from Hong Kong). However, with the new casino open up, the demand of 5 seaters cab are high again. However, due to both Toyota and Nissan doesn't make 5 seaters diesel anymore (infact, Nissan stop selling LPG taxi cab late 2004 in HK, pulling out a 36 years old market), they only make Singapore spec. 4 seaters. Therefore, they introduce the Liteace 5 seaters. And Mercedes also want a piece of the large taxi market due to tourism rising, they introduce the 6 seater taxis (so far only 2 of them exists), and Hyundai soon follow with 2 more example...BTW: around 2000 Mercedes did try to market the Mercedes Vito 114 LPG as an accessible taxi in Hong Kong, but they failed after less then 1 month of trial.

HK Taxi lifespan so short only? In Singapore it is 8 years.Originally posted by art0925:Well, so far i think there are still 4-5 diesel cab left in HK, mostly older Toyota Crown that are around 1992-1994, the Crown Comfort are all scrapped since they are not that reliable, and mostly the interior/ exterior are parts for Hong Kong, and Japan.
As they scrapped almost 15000 of the toyota crown taxi from 1995 models to 2000 models, there are tones of cheap parts. this is also why people choose Crown Comfort LPG, because there are enought used parts and also cheap new parts for that car....As Crown are now 98% of the market share (as of Dec. 2005) Nissan, due to it's aging design and heavier, are now not a favor of Red Cab owners, but there are still some Green Cab, as New Territories need more stronger vehicle. and Crown are not that storng..
There were also 10 Ford Falcon Wagon (Australian) but now there are only 3 left, 2 red, one green..As the mileage is not that great, and expensive parts.
Well, for LPG, you simply fill them up @ Caltex, Shell, or ECO Energy Company Limited (12 stations), however, there are not alot of them available, probably around 20 LPG Station in HK, therefore, you see LPG Taxi and Minibus line up for filling up gas. (BTW: LPG minibus is not that popular, due to small tank size)
Also, nowadays Taxi life are about 3-5 years, compare to 7-12 years before, this is due to easier financing, and also (most of the cab are sold to cab dealer/company, they they either resale/ lease to driver, as the distributer rarly sells to general public)
As for Macau, Crown are rare site (only 4 known to be exist, 2 crown comfort, and 2 older crowns), as most drivers used to prefer Toyota Corona/ Nissan Cedric, but now, the available cab for general purchase (black cab) are Toyota Corolla, Litace, and Mercedes Vito. As those Cedric were left over Diesel stock of Hong Kong when they switch to LPG. Also, the market for taxi were used to be similar to Hong Kong (except the Isuzu Aska, Mazda 323, Toyota Corolla, which were never popular in Hong Kong in the early 80s, but popular in Macau) due to the small size of Macau market, and similar regulation of vehicle. For the Corona however, latter stocks were specially for Macau (as Hong Kong stops the sales of 4 seaters around 1990, hint the interior door panel is painted black/ white, but not red). Nowaday, all Macau taxis are special stock for Macau, as the regulation changed and different then Hong Kong. (However, for corolla, liteace, they are similar spec as the Singapore and Thailand versions)
Also, one interesting fact: All Macau Taxi are painted in Hong Kong and have Hong Kong meters and taxi sign, (even the taxi signs on the side of newer vehicles are same font as Hong Kong once)
Originally posted by 105090:then those 4 crowns comfort.. once accident or breakdown means scrap immediately? since the spare parts also difficult to find, and may be expensive
Originally posted by 105090:that Nissan Cedric.. can the owners just abandoned their vehicles just like that?
Nissan no longer sells taxis? There are some new Cedrics in Singapore. Been around since late 2004, I think.Originally posted by art0925:Well, this taxi was sold to a dealer, but the dealer probably plan to scrapped it, but somehow abandon it around it's property....As Nissan doesn't sell Taxis anymore, more and more people are turn to Toyota, Crown motor (Inchape) are the monopoly of the Taxi market now. and since there are no export market for LPG, they just become reuseable metals...some are as young as 3 years old. BTW, because of easy finance and really high price of taxi license, fleet owners are willing to replace cab quickly in a rate of 3-6 years, instead of the 7-12 years that used to be the norm....Private owners, however, tend to care their cab with care, therefore, they are less mileage and longer life...right now a used Toyota crown with 2 years usually cost around 80,000HKD, (220,000 when brandnew), but Nissan....(for a 2 years old....last version with deluxe package (ie: auto door, power window/ mirror, 4 wheel disk brake, alloy wheels, and sedan dash board cost around 30,000-->good lower mile condition....The abandon one are older version with the taxi dashboard, it only cost around 10,000 as a second hand (when new is 180,000) and cost 5,000 to scrap.
