Hi,Originally posted by jaydunkfull:hamsters need to bathe???
i used to have 2 hamsters and whenever i clean their cage, i take them out and leave them in a small plastic tank with bathing sand.Originally posted by Onlined:Hi,
Though there are rodent shampoos (Stated hamsters, etc) in the market, in my opinions I feel hamsters shouldn't get wet, unless is a long haired syrian (teddy bear). For dwarves, sand bath should be efficient. But not to bathe them too regularly, because the sand is rather expensive. Should use wisely. Look at the condition of the fur and if they really need it... After a while of bathing in the sand, the dwarf hamster will actually make a toilet out of it, and it becomes a spot for pee and poo. Haha... My friend used to put in the sand bath for 2-3 hours every 2 weeks. And that quantity he used for a long time! Haha... For me, I just leave the sand bath in.
a fine warning indeed. just to let you know i got friends who have the above interested. not too interested though, im busy with work, my sis has already 3 terrapins and 20 odd guppies. last time had hamsters, the mother ate the kids, suspected our ex maid went to touh them, sad.Originally posted by Onlined:You know I know of someone who gave up her hammies for adoption, 3 different entire families... and this person actually wanted to adopt all, and she spent all her efforts to give valuable info, so they'll be taken care of properly... Luckily, just when she was ready to leave her home with her hams, she discovered the hams were actually going to be snake food. She got so upset, and paranoic that she only gave to her close friends. Got other cases, that is why I'm very cautious over ppl's intentions.
Which is why if you put a price (can be very low, if the person is sincere) - though will look materialistic to many pet lovers - it really gives snake/hammie-eating pet owners a back off. Unless the person is your trusted friend, whom you know doesn't own any of those meat eating pets.
Your hammies stank probably because their fur is stained with urine. Does your hammies, the butt area looks yellowish and slick? Keep the urine spots cleared more often, and provide a lil thicker bedding, to absorb the pee more efficiently before it stains them as they walk over. Keeping them in cool spots, providing a great hideout also helps reduce the heat and provide warmth and safety.Originally posted by mamamamama:i used to have 2 hamsters and whenever i clean their cage, i take them out and leave them in a small plastic tank with bathing sand.

Many hammies lovers have gradually changed from wood shavings to even better pee absorbing bedding. Newer bedding that works even better, and seems more comfortable... corn cobs, cat litter, BC, etc. You may want to find out which bedding works best, in keeping these smells off your hamster. Because one of the biggest reasona s to why a hammies stinks, is attributed to their pee stains.
not really intending to keep hamster in foreseeable future but just wondering, i had one of those 2 level cages with a tunnel at the side previously and the hamster kept pissing in the tunnel stinking up the whole place . anyway to make it urine somewhere else?Originally posted by Onlined:Your hammies stank probably because their fur is stained with urine.
