Accident on SLE

damn suay... today actually want to go to celebrate cny one but kena accident... i on SLE towards mandai, and this white car in front of me suddenly swerved left without braking at all. i was wondering wat the hell was he thinking about and suddenly i saw this golden renault scenic in front of me and i jammed the brakes immediately but crashed. The scenic was stationary or near stationary. i estimate i was around 90 to 100km/h when i applied the brakes, so it should be around 60-70km/h when crash. Luckily everyone all right but my car cannot start engine at all... if repair need to change whole body, thinking of getting a new car instead... so who do u think is more wrong? me or the scenic? if the scenic hadn't stopped at all or stopped at the shoulder then i wouldn't have crashed... if the white car had braked b4 swerving then i would have been prepared... now i have a feeling that the white car purposely want me to crash one

after crashing at the speed of 70km/h i wouldnt b suprised if ur car cant start ... and i dont think any1 would wanna make some1 crash into another car, think u watched too much tv shows ... i dont know who is rite and who is wrong ( still a n00b ) but i think the most important thing is that every1 is safe.

Sorry to hear abt your accident.. hope you are all right.. anyway I thought nobody is suppose to stop at road shoulder unless it a damned emergency or vehicle breakdown and in which both situation the driver has to on the hazard light. Try to remember if the scenic was stationery because of the following purpose and if the hazard light and triangle sign was there or not(if breakdown). If don't have its possible to shift some blame to the other party. As for the white car... u can't do much but to hope he meets a worst accident than you

Should be considered ur fault..Ur following distance is too close already and u should be paying attention to traffic ahead and not just right infront of u..Always be prepared for any sudden brake..
Anyway, if ur car is a sti then really wasted ah..Like that crash and change new car..Rich leh.. -

Based on what you described, in my opinion, you were TOO CLOSE and the white car wants you to learn something; Don't Tailgate.
If, you had kept a good distance, I guarantee you will have been able to avoid this crash at such a high speed.
Why in the first place, must you travel so close at such a speed? Whether the car in front signals to swerve out is irrelevant. The fact that you could not evade a crash, is obvious that you were too close. In an emergency, it is not possible to signal before swerving out to avoid a collision. Only a safe distance of at least 3 car lengths can allow you time to react.
Even then, it all depends on how attentive you are, while driving. -
Didn't the Basic theory book said like 1 car length for every 10km/hr. So it should be 9 car length for 90km/L. Anyway, tailgating is an offence, I think, so for this incident, I guess you are at fault. Be glad no-one is hurt.Originally posted by ShutterBug:STiYaKuzA,

Personally, based on my experiences on the roads, whenever I see a flashy Japanese car like an WRX STi, Mit Evo, or whatever cheap Japanese speed machines, I know they will follow very close behind me. Always trying to prove something on the road because they can run faster. Why must this be so?
Even when I'm driving a car, at 80-90Kmh on the center lane, why must you speed machine drivers, hurry others in front by tailgating? What the H-E-L-L do you people hope to achieve? A trophy???
You want a speed machine, please bring along your heart and brains when you drive!!!
No point saying sorry in court after killing someone because of your SELFISH attitudes!!!
Deflating your egos a little, can save some lives on our roads. -
i'm in a '03 civic, and the scenic did not turn on the hazard lights nor had the triangle sign. sure, i was close to the white car, but not tailgating it. but wouldn't the scenic be in the wrong as well? she said that she stopped coz the car in front of her was driving irresponsibly(must be swerving in and out) but did she need to stop at all? she could have slowed down but no need to stop mah...

I usually avoid the overtaking lane unless I'm really overtaking, then pull quickly to the second, or even third lane if I can. So if some speedking still wants to tailgate, I'll just gradually slow down till we're both driving at 5km/h (hasn't happened yet 
) or they just overtake on the right. -
even if u r not tailgating, i believe tat u r also not in a safe following distance which is taught to u when u learn how to drive. and the white car has done nth wrong. be careful next time..

You should tape what she said. This is a piece of good evidence that a driver has stopped without good reason resulting in the accident. The three question I would ask for this accident would be
(1) "Did the scenic stop suddenly and without valid reason"? If yes, this is the party at fault.
(2) "Was the white car day-dreaming and did not realize a car has stopped and continue to speed along only to realize the stopping car in the last second?" If yes, you got sabo by this driver, but is unlikely able to blame him.
(3) "Were you following too close and fast to allow any reaction time at all?" -
Think you should be thanking your lucky stars if the car did swerve without a real reason and all that happened was you hit the car ahead of you.
I think the point about tailgating is regardless of what reason the car in front of you has to swerve or stop, you would not be involved in an accident. The prescribed distance is just a guideline. If your need more reaction time, then you should just have more distance or drive slower.
If the car ahead of you had to swerve due to jaywalking pedestrian, would you have reacted in time to avoid the pedestrian? -
So that was you in the accident...it caused alittle jam on the expressway. Gald that no one was hurt.

You are right when you say the Scenic should not have stopped, I have been behind cars which has no car in front of them but brake suddenly or behind cars that brake at every 3 seconds (i really saw a Hyundai Sonata do that to me before hahaha).
The key thing in defensive driving is that whatever the stupid actions of others, we must be alert and prepared to avoid accidents. We must ALWAYS expect others to make mistakes, We must ALWAYS think that our car, a machine, may screw up today; this is good defensive driving. Though its not 100% foolproof, it is a good guideline to follow.
In your case, whatever the stupid actions the scenic or the white car in front of you did, it is very hard to tell the TP that the fault is not yours because you crash into a car directly in front of you. The only time a friend got off banging someone was he was going straight and someone suddenly cut into his lane and he bang. Though he bang from behind, there were eye witnesses and also he took photos of the scene that the front car suddenly swerve in the lane which he has right of way of.
So bro, just be thankful no one is hurt and well for the accident, you can call it suay or what, but just take it as a lesson lah.... -
Then, be prepared to be taken as the one who is responsible for the accident. And as others said, learn to drive defensively. At the end of the day, it is not who is right which is the most important but rather if there is any accident or death. -

for this case, three separate observations surfaced:
1. what the hell was the lady driver doing STOPPING on an expressway (if i have read the threads correctly)??? if someone infront of her was driving irresponsibly, shouldnt she change lane, or slow down, instead of STOP totally??
2. the white car was apparently too close to the scenic too, and hence the need for it to swerve off suddenly. and furthermore it did so WITHOUT any warning lights. one of those idiots who should have their fingers chopped off again.
3. the poster of this thread was obviously also too close to the white car, and at the same time, travelling too quickly for the road condition, and perhaps, had a lapse of concentration at the moment.
it takes two (or more) hands to clap. all parties have their portion of the blame to shoulder. but well, this is unlikely to be how the TP is going to see it. be glad that everyone is safe, and learn a lesson from it.
