I think it should be pretty ok to drive SUV so long you dun drive recklessly and do stunts to it... But do take note that SUV drinks and suck money of your wallet pretty fast... ![]()
had a SUV better handling than all the saloon cars I had so far

It depends on what's your definition of "better handling". Do you mean the steering feels better? More accurate? More feelsome? More weighty? Or are you saying body control is betteR? Less roll? Or ride comfort is better?
personally, i like this one

Well, for most premium SUVs, they do have build quality to withstand a certain amount of impact during collision due to its size. But, it's more prone to bodyroll while turning due to its high cg.
In my opinion, Jeep's range of cars are mostly SUV.
I can tell you really dun like SUVs.... sorry but I am impartial... SUV may have higher center of gravity and tend to be more 'dangerous' than other counterparts, but it doesn't make other non-SUVs safer either. It all depends on the likes and habits of the driver. If he drives safely, I dun care if the vehicle is an SUV or not, safest car in the world or not, he will still come home in 1 piece.
You might be the most skillful driver in the world and even master the notoriously poorly handling SUVs perfectly, but not everyone else is that good and they still might cause you an accident. Any car with poor safety is like a city without a fire brigade.
Furthermore, those premium brands have engineered their SUVs as much as they can to overcome the handicaps that they possess, so times have certainly changed and you will still see people drive SUVs on the roads no matter what.
I also see people driving coupé-cabriolets made out of family hatchbacks. Dreadful. The manufacturers build what people happen to buy for whatever reason, not what they need. And the people that created the whole SUV boom were indeed American soccer moms. Not the group with whom I identify when choosing a car.

This is a misconception, because there is a reason for the tin can concept. The cars are made to fold in a way that best keeps the driver safe. The folding itself takes a lot of the deadly energy away, but it also guides the heavy engine away from the driver and the passengers. Inside the tin can there is a sturdy frame that protects the people inside the car from the rest of the impact and optimally keeps the doors openable.
One unnecessary major safety issue with SUVs is, that they're mainly built for the US market. This is a problem because there the law demands that the cars are built safe for drivers driving without a seat belt. This in turn is a problem because it makes the safety less-than-optimal for drivers that do use the seat belts. For example in the Jeep Cherokee there is a bolster that will smash your knees if you're using a seat belt. Another issue is the usually low number of airbags, as they can potentially kill you if you're driving without a seat belt.
What makes SUVs outright asocial is however the fact, that a pedestrian has virtually no chances to survive if hit by a SUV. New cars with lower centre of gravity like the Subaru Impreza are not just safer for the people inside, but also have advanced safety systems protecting the pedestrians.

XC90 is as good as a SUV could ever be. Despite actually being the worst Volvo, it still did get the full five stars for passenger safety (and two for pedestrian, most SUVs do zero) in the Euro NCAP crash test. The relatively low centre of gravity also helps to keep the car somewhat more stable than the SUVs typically are.
I wouldn't get the V8 though, it's wasted money in a car that weighs well over two tons. I'd get the diesel engine. It provides almost the same amount of torque as the V8 (and that at much lower rounds), but consumes a lot less fuel.

yep, i agree that the diesels produce much more power than their petrol counterparts.. but then again, i don't think the D5 diesel is available in singapore?
i'm aware of the volvo s80 with a d5 twin turbo. but it isn't available in SG too. :)
just get the car u like. y bother what so many people here say. a rav4 is good if u want to ferry more stuff and people around. most mscp nowadays can accommodate a mid sized suv easily. i drove a toyota prado for months b4 i changed it to my current ride. i still miss the load carrying abilities of the prado. ignore what lauri says, for he/she may have some unpleasant experiences with suvs or maybe he/she can't afford the petrol for a suv. said it once, shall say it again. follow your heart and get whatever catches your fancy.

Agreed... I think more or less TS would have a better idea of SUV after reading all the posts in this thread.... ![]()

Please give TS advice that applies for SUVs in Singapore. There's no diesel XC90s in Singapore yet.
