Halaal (ØÙ„ال, halÄl, halal) is an Islamic Arabic term meaning "permissible". It has both a general and specific meaning.
When people use the word in Islamic countries, they usually mean to say what is allowed by Islamic Law.
In non-islamic countries, the word usually means fit to be eaten by a Muslim.
Muslims have strict rules of what they can and cannot eat:
When Jewish people say something is Kashrut (or Kosher), they mean a similar thing except Jewish people are allowed to have alcohol which is made from grapes(made in a certain way of course).

Muslims have strict rules of what they can and cannot eat:
- Animals need to be killed in a special way. (by saying Bismillah and Allah hu Akbar on each animal, and the animal should be slaughtered by hand so that all the blood be drained from the slaughtered {dead} animal before they can eat the animal. It is called "Zabah Halal" in arabic language meaning "Hand Slaughtered"
- They also should not eat the meat of carnivores or omnivores. This includes pork.
- All seafood is halal. fish that has scales is ok, but animals that live both in the water and on land are not permissible (for example, frogs may not be eaten). There is a debate about shellfish, but most Muslim groups think it is halal.
- They should not drink alcohol or consume other intoxicating substances (for example, narcotics).
When Jewish people say something is Kashrut (or Kosher), they mean a similar thing except Jewish people are allowed to have alcohol which is made from grapes(made in a certain way of course).

in wet markets, more or less halal chicken is sold by muslims, non-halal chicken sold by non-muslims... if non-muslims sell halal chicken, then they gotta have the adequate stamp of approval..
even in supermarkets like fairprice, processed/cut chicken even have halal, non-halal sections...
hope this clears.

i long time never go wet market buy chicken.
oh i @@ thanks sinicker.
not racist but am sure not happy with the halal thing in the country. to get the halal cert, the operator or manufacturer must have a certain percentage of muslim employees.
And things that have affected badly are like, pepperoni are usually made of pork and pizza hut serve beef pepperoni. being a buddhist, i can choose to have other pizza and dont even make an hintch about a no beef cert. i love pepperoni but due to religon restrictions, i gotta give it a miss.
Hamburger as its name suggest, are pork while mac in singapore serve them made of beef unlike the us, pork. gotta give it a miss again.
dont see the need to make a big hoo ha for our muslim friends here demanding a halal cert before they eat at a certain place. just like vegetarians, order what you dont think contain meat or specify to the waiter that you are a muslim. please serve me halal certified meat and not contain any non halal ingredients into it.
why the fuss?
by the way, most drugs like sleeping pills, panadol, cough syrup, painkillers etc. are not halal so why eat?

its up to the discretion of buyers.

reason being, drug are not made from meat.
u dun see halal cabbage or beansprouts rite?
cant totally agree with that. drugs are like proccessed food. just like glucosamine are made from shells of shellfish according to wiki. strepstrils contain alcohol(not sure now but does contain ethanol 3 years back)
the drugs does not contain any information on the packing if they are halal or vegetarian.
comparing that with vegetables is not approiate since thats pretty much a straight forward thing.

Thats where supply and demand comes in...
If I open a restaurant and sells pork and i made market research that more of my customers buy non pork dishes than pork dishes, isn't it more feasible for me to garner more piece of the pie rather than having a stagnant income and overbearing supply of pork at the same time.
I mean non muslims have so many places to feed on pork wat...(all those chinese BKT/Kway Chap stalls, German kitchens etc) Is it so hard for Muslims to have variety and socially integrate with their non-muslims friend? For goodness sake, TS, i have already taken action regarding what you said in the previous thread...You only have yourself to blame.
i dont think any muslim ever demanded a certain place to be halal.
it's just the food establishments wanna increase their consumer base by some hundred thousands.
No pork, no lard i think can already.
