I see, thanks for the clarifications.Originally posted by pagemap:Most people get paid every two weeks. But when they are hired they are quoted an annual salary that will be divided out amongst those two week periods.
You are answering some difficult questions...! The way it works is the US government runs a program called social security that will pay a small pension upon retirement. If I can remember wayyyy back from a class I took two semesters ago....the way this works is 12.5% of your paycheck is deducted and deposited in social security, while you're employer is required by law to match that 12.5%. So every paycheck you are getting 25% of it in social security.Originally posted by Nelstar:I see, thanks for the clarifications.
Regarding pension again. How does pension work in the US? How does one get entitlement to his/her pension and who is responsible for the pension. I was quite buffled by my friends who said the country/state is responsible while another saying that the company is responsible.
Thanks. I knew it was hard to understand, but could not get the correct answers all the time. At least you enlightened me.Originally posted by pagemap:You are answering some difficult questions...! I'm not very well educated on how company pensions work here... I know we have something called a 401(k) which is a tax free retirement plan, usually the way it works is the employee will pay into that plan and the employer matches it up to a certain percentage of the employee's annual salary.

Erhmm, see I play a lot of games on USA servers and it never fails to amaze me how some adults there are so ignorant about things happening around the world.Originally posted by pagemap:A lot of kids from probably age 13 down probably don't really care to be informed about current events, so they are happy enough watching MTV and being ignorant. But as you might guess as people get older they start to mature and become more aware of what's going on around them...
Well just because it's on a USA server doesn't mean everyone on there is from the USA. I mean you admitted yourself that you played on USA servers and clearly you are not american...Originally posted by elindra:Erhmm, see I play a lot of games on USA servers and it never fails to amaze me how some adults there are so ignorant about things happening around the world.
Well, its not because they are some gaming nerd, because the Europeans are gaming nerds too and they are not that ignorant.
Of course you get the really smart and well-informed ones as well, but they are rare and chances are they are Canadians or Europeans who converted their citizenship.
Don't flame me. This is my experience so far.
Oh, and its the kids who have a better understanding of world geography and culture. I wonder is it due to the subjects they study.

Is the society in US really that bad? As in, you keep seeing shootings and stuff
Maybe I didn't make myself clear.Originally posted by pagemap:Well just because it's on a USA server doesn't mean everyone on there is from the USA. I mean you admitted yourself that you played on USA servers and clearly you are not american...
And my guess is that it would be the younger generation who plays computer games online, probably from age 25 down. I dont know many older people who play computer games.
Yeap, heard of some of them selling Gil in FFXII, and camping out in some places.Originally posted by elindra:Maybe I didn't make myself clear.
When I say Americans, I'm not assuming everyone is one, but after I clarified that they are American and are they originally an American citizen, that was why I made such a statement.
So its, yes I am American but not originally American to those I spoke to. Those who has a better idea of world affairs are American but not originally American, if it makes better sense to you now.
You are wrong there. There are in fact alot of those who are 25 and above and I have met people up to their 40s who are in the games I play. Some even turn it into their job, trading and selling pixels for real money, and it s lucrative business.
hi, US citizen. i sure like this thread title of yours,Originally posted by pagemap:I feel there is a lot of "bad blood" between the US and the rest of the world, and a lot of misinformation is being spread about americans. The point of this thread is to ask me (a US citizen) questions about something or another you may have heard about the US. I'll tell you whether what you heard was true, or I will expand on a topic you may have a question about.
Ask away!

You have to realize CSI, etc are television programs which bear very little resemblance to real life. They are realistic enough that they are believable...but real life is nothing like that.
I'm surprised you get CBS down there
