Perhaps this lack of chivalry is due to the culture here in Singapore. When I was studying in London, I held open doors for other people all the time, since that was the established practice there. But when I come back to Singapore, for some reason I just can't give a damn about it anymore.

i think .. hmmm... chivalry or courtesy is doing something
you feel you NEED to do
and you will not stop simply cos other people are doing it, or other people are not doing it (then that's just peer pressure),
or because people dont reciprocate or appreciate your gesture.

and I'll open the door for him whenever he needs to go out
he doesn't thank me either.

Afterall we are brought up in a realistically and pragmatic kind of social upbringing, where we tends not to do things that do not have beneficial reapings.
In a way we are also self concious from drawing wierd responses in a society where face values are pretty prevalent. -

We have to reflect why they don't do it anymore.
Singaporeans are notorious for being rude and taking things for granted.
They think that it is "their right" that people do things out of courtesy for them.
If you don't get appreciation and snobbish glares when you do something nice, tendancy is that you just stop doing it. Sad but true.
Also, with the "Men and Women are Equal" agenda going around, you can't blame them for treating us as equals.

i see ppl rushing for the lift, i will purposely press the close button. and when they can make it, i will laugh at them when the door close infront of them.
when ppl rushing for time, on the escalator, i will stand like 5 step behind the person in front and block in the center of the stairs.
when opening doors, i will only open the door till only i can slide through it.
when boarding bus, i will squeeze and push the ppl around me to try to get in first.
when in the queue, i will rush to get in line. and ppl infront of me like not paying attention, i will go infront of them secretly. that applies to parents who is trying to control their naughty kids. -

for me i will hold the door open for the next person to hold on to it but not like hold and let the pple pass unless they look like they need help(like carrying one ton of stuff) for the bus i wont squeeze pass others actively but i try to make sure i dun get squeezed passed by others,(again this applies to normal pple and not to visibly old and disabled pple) i do this cos i feel that i queued for so long in front of them they should wait for their turn what exempts them from queueing and waiting
just my views maybe you can say i am unchilvarous but i say i am just fair and treating every one including myself the same -
