Can turtles breathe in water?? I just bought one and its always submerged in water... And anyone knows what do they eat?

They can't breathe in water, they just hold their breath pretty well.
When its hungry, it eats anything you give it. -
mine seems to appear drown all the time leh.

hmmm... which species of turtle did u buy? Turtles need to breathe atmospheric air, and they should be allowed to come onto dry land and only a little water will do, unless u're keeping totally aquatic turtles like the pignosed turtle...Originally posted by technoboy:Can turtles breathe in water?? As for food, u can try commercially available turtle pellets for a start. Very much depends on the species actually. -
turtle ah?? not terapin or tortoise??? turtles can hold their breaths very very well one loh... you'd get bored trying to wait for it to surface one...

It's a protected species, not illegal to keep but restricted sale.. so it's very very very very rare here...
Notice also that it is the ONLY true freshwater turtle that has flippers (like marine turtles) instead of claws... -

Wow that one is cute! Hmmm... Mine is just the normal type..? Not sure what is the name of the species tho... But it seems to be in the water and fell asleep?? Lol... Seems like in the water for quite a long time...

I'm not sure of the species of your turtle.. As in if it is a 'true' aquatic turtle (like the pignosed), it is ok to put it in a deep tank of water with no dry area as long as the tank is not filled to the brim, thus allowing it to swim up to the surface to take gasps of air from time to time. Flippers? Then most probably it is a pignosed turtle.. since it is the only species of freshwater turtle to have flippers like the marine turtles. How much did u get it for? they do not breathe in the water.. but will occasionally surface to the top to breathe air..

as for food.. u can alternate between aquori turtle sticks/blood worms cube/mealworms.. they should take it readily.. -

alternatively.. go buy a piece of rock or drift wood from the local fish shop.. the turtle will go on top of the rock/wood to rest occasionally.. -
Yea paid like $3 I think... But my family is a vegetarian... So we cant really buy blood worms and stuffs... And the head is always in the water.. I tried moving it and it was still moving...
