Notice also that it is the ONLY true freshwater turtle that has flippers (like marine turtles) instead of claws...

Please don't buy any exotic pets. Since they're illegal, they have to be smuggled in, and the process of smuggling is very cruel and many animals die along the way. These animals are caught from the wild not bred on farms, and so by supporting the pet trade, you are helping in their extinction.

Oh really? I saw quite a few Aquariums stocking (and displaying) the pignosed turtle openly last year, so thought it should be legal. I have even thought of keeping one myself. Hmmm.. so it's illegal to keep soft-shell turtles as well? PLEASE.. start feeding him meat.. or else, you turtle will die in no time.. even though they do eat plant.. however, they main diet is still other animals..
do visit a fish shop really soon.. get a can of aquori food stick (made of fish and other things).. let him try out..
btw, what do u feed him?
and if possible, get some aquarium treated sand as substrate.. they like to burrow into sand.. it's their way to way "security" and "comfort".. they might get stress up without anything to hide..

soft-shell is pretty okay, not on the endanger list..
however, if u have soft-shell, handle with care.. since they do not have a hard protection, they use BITING as their form of defence.. -

my advise to all is not confuse between REAL turtles, terrappins and Tortoise.
(despite we all call them turtles by large)
TURTLES - sea (can survive and swim deep water without drowning) and need deep water level
Terrappines - BOTH land & water based, need water to play, cool and waddle in BUT like the many $3 very cute red ear sliders (2 red/orange stripes near ear area) - NO CONSTANT WATER OVER THE HEAD (esp nose) over the long term or it WILL DROWN due to fatigue cos cannot swim constantly to breath air.
TORTOISE - land based, no water except for drinking, heard will die if constant contact (not drown) in water (tortoise 'expert'/ breeders please add info) -
You mean terrapin? They are half land half water. for red-eared, they might prefer animal matters when they are juvenile.. since their body needs more protein to grow.. a lack of animals will jeopardise their growth when they are younger..
for the older red-eared, most people switch to pure vegetables.. which in my opinion, might not be totally good, still need to treat them to meat once a while to supplement their body needs.. =P
it's very easy to different between soft-shell and red-eared.. one has soft-shell, the other has red-eared..

the so-called terrapin in local fish shop is known as Red-Eared Slider under the "basking" category internationally.. =P
terrapin, in german (i think), means turtles that spend a huge amount of time on the land.. if they do not return to the water, their shell might get affected (too dry).. they come on land to bask, to get the required sunlight (vit D3) for their shell to grow.. -

one is land based and the other is water based..
u can soak tortoises in the water though., water up to feet level.. they will enjoy the soaking.. however, since they cant swim, they will get drown if they are thrown in a tank.. -

Special note to ppl with star tortoises: pls keep the terrarium as dry as possible as star tortoises come from arid areas with low humidity and Singapore is too humid.

just some minor comments.. =P there's one species of tortoises that is flat, and aptly called pancake tortoise.. =P
and some turtles/terrapins are omnivorous.. including red-eared and soft-shelled, commonly found in singapore.. =) -

And you're right in saying terrapins are omnivorous too. Small red-eared sliders feed mostly on meat and gradually should be fed more plant matter when they get older. They have become pests in Singapore's waterways, driving native species to near extinction. -

I think u should feed them the food pellets for terrapin.. can buy from aquarium shops.. pls stop feeding them veggies only.. they will become unhealthy as not enuff nutrients.... they are more of meat-lovers..
Mine i even feed them prawns.. but for u, just feed them pellets ok.. -

oh, it's the red-eared slider afterall.. =P
they do eat vegetables.. but then do supplement with meat.. if u do not wish to handle meat, getting the turtle sticks should be fine..
and for the vegetables, try to get leafy vegetables.. kang kong, xiao bai cai, etc.. should be okay.. i myself will not use xiao bai cai..
i'm feeding my RES blood-worms, turtle sticks.. will increase the proportion of vegetables real soon.. -

My red-ear sliders are kept on a diet of turtle pellets supplemented with fresh market prawn meat every other day. I don't even feed them vegetables, but they seem as healthy as ever and its been over 10 years liao...
