imo catholic church needs reforms after being damaged by recent scandles... -
yup.. there were scandals..
but there can be good done.. just as the good done by John Paul II will live on, there can be good done by Benedict XVI
he's not a reformist.. there is not much to reform.. there are rogue elements in the church.. who knows? german discipline may right the rogue elements

Not really. The liberal ones believed that as humans discover more about the world, human knowledge inevitably increase. So, equipped with new knowledge, humanity are better able to understand religion and thus provide a more "accurate" interpretation of the religion.
