i tink it's the atmosphere there bah, cos very different from tv watching
can realli feel upbeat ambience over there
juz that the traffic after that is terrible.
most pple stay back for the party after that though, it;s fun lah -
was in it last year...
the way the encik looked at me, i think i might get arrowed for this year

definitely is the ambience that is making the difference. but i agree that this feeling will wear off ultimately. i used to enjoy the parade especially when the goh matched past the parade square....but couple of years ago i was the ensign officer for my unit....every sat need to go to national stadium for the parade rehearsal...........do until sian....so now not very enthusatic oredi

i got sick of watching the NDP on tv many many years ago. but watching it life is a totally different thing. it's not something you can just analyse and think about, you have to be there to understand.
ever since then, i've hoped that i could go every year. -

but after getting arrowed last year and actually being part of it, especially when its Goh Chok Tong's last ndp as PM, the feeling is different when you're actually there.
Sure you may b|tch and complain about the weekends burnt.
But I tell myself at least I was part of it once. If i get arrowed again this year... ehhhh i'm part of it twice. -
lol. nothing beats the feeling of hormat senja-ta while the national anthem plays and the chinooks bearing the state flag fly-past. i think that's the highest point of the parade, makes u proud to be a soldier!

But not everybody gets to be in the marching contigent. Don't forget the troops who are attached to the various schools and organisations to help out in the performances. Every soldier plays a part, big or small. The atmosphere is definitely different if you are a spectator at NDP. Lots of shouting and senseless screaming whenever something happens. Only once you a year, can you find thousands of other S'poreans gather to be as rowdy and noisy as possible. Honestly, I don't give a damn to the actual parade.
I agree that the formula needs to be changed. So boring...year after year, there is sure to be the following:
1. Parachuters landing (with the usual "Mission Impossible" theme playing)
2. mass display of multi-racial harmony (People's Association always in charge)
3. Some light display (Soka Association always in charge)
4. Some local star will pop out from the stage and sing theme song, followed by fireworks then national anthem (not forgetting the standard helicopters with national flag routine)
Sometimes they even recycle their props and costumes. Like Chingay, it's just "take the rice out from the fridge and throw in some ingredients year after year" -
If I am to be a spectator at the NDP in the stadium, my reason for being there is only for the goodie bags. Get the bags, and sell whatever items inside it to the karanguni man to earn back some money to pay for the transport fare increase. Better yet, selling the tickets to suckers is another choice.
Like what many said above. Whats so nice about the celebrations? If you like to watch celebration, tape down the Olympics starting and ending ceremonies and watch them during National Day. The Olympic ceremonies are World Class. Why watch a boring Singapore class that repeats itself year after year after year when you can watch new World Class shows every 4 years! -

i find it boring.. if i were to go to a squeezathon.. like what fireice said.. i'd rather go to live concerts.. and that's what its full of here in atlanta.. full of taking back sunday,rufio,sum41,finch gigs etc.

last Sat NE show was watching from 25 level Westin hotel room,
nothing to shout about, almost more than one hours mobile convo,
fire work also not that nice
aero plane / fighter fly too high
only best view is red lion accident ,
