I think the guy stay on with the gal becos he can't give a good reason why his feelings dies off.
could be the following reason :
Stay on trying to salvage the relationship
stay on try to find more evidance to leave
waiting for a big quarrel to start so that can ends it once and for all -

but sometimes.. it's strange how ur heart works.. for some people guys and gals, they need to have someone who intrude into their lives to realise that the feeling for their current partner has fade... You always see this situation, be it urself or ur frenz... but i call this " a change of heart"
there's a change of heart occurs when the feelings for ur partner has allowance for it. -
