MS is a company to reckon with....it was good that they entered the games market to destroy Sony's monopoly.
Personally i dont like Sony for the high price they charged for their PS produtcs before. Right now Sony has already one leg crippled
Now with the new Xbox priced so competitively let's wait and see if Sony can afford pull off that cheap PS2 stunt again back in 99 with their upcoming PS3- deliberatly jacking up prices and claiming their CPUs are in shortage.
The real story heard was that Sony ran into financial and technical problems developing a system which had a flawed and expensive R&D . And they also needed to recoup all the cost of their R&D in the Emotion Engine CPU -
MS acted smart in this area by "tweaking" already existing technology and providing "extra horsepower" with relatively cheap R&D while still manage to beat the PS2 in 3D graphic performance.
At the time it was already a big humiliation for Sony who were touting the EE CPU was "capable of emotions". The only emotion i got was - "crap all they gave were low res textured games with lousy graphics which looks no better than a Voodoo 3 !!"
Even their MGS 2 was not good as the original and MS flagship title HAlo had beaten MGS2 hands down in storyline, graphics and gameplay -

Hmm...Bit the xbox 360 runs on old techonology. It uses DVDs. Sony's PS3 uses Blu Ray technology disc...

Sony all the way! Unless Square Enix decide to default to M$ like how they dumped Nintendo for Sony, thus giving us FFVII.

Sony is already having problems with their cell technology in PS3.
In my opinion, the so called EE engine concept of parallel processing never took off. Sony had great ambitions on evolving their PS2 to other sues like network server ect but MS came into the scene and disrupted eveyrthing. THe focus for Sony changed to maintaining a competitive edge with MS.
What would have happened if Sony was dominant with their PS2? -
I feel MS had done everything sui sui in their hardware department.Remember because the creation of a platform that strikes balance between hardware, software, and services is not an easy task. If wrong decisions are made, you could end up with a design that has pure processing power only at a CPU level (PS2 ) or a console that has an excellent graphics chip but its CPU is inefficient.

Back in 1996, the game Panzer Dragoon 2 (saturn) was a breakthrough in console graphics for its time. It was all possible because of the Saturn;s processing capabilites, ubfortunatelythe console was was a failure -
