If chocolates are not your cup of tea, theres an alternative, raisins or grapes. They do the same thing. No problem finding that.

Big dogs like Golden Retriever/German Shepherd/Shettie don't bark anyhow de. Strangers are humans, respect strangers too. Got one german shepard in my neighbourhood also bark at people like no tomorrow, and everytime I give him the finger, he barks even louder, to his owner's demise.

ok.. that seriously sounds extremely farked up.. just try and get rid of that dog.. sue them or something.. complain.. just keep writing letters into AVA or HDB or w/e.. i love dogs.. and the owner of the dogs should just die

Or simply a way of trying to 'chase' you away...try give a light pat on their head and let them lick your hand so as to let them get use to you and trust you.....

Actually, there are a number of dogs in my neighbourhood too but strangely, I don't hear them barking. These dogs get walked everyday so perhaps they are familiar/comfortable with humans/strangers.
Origamist, maybe you can suggest to your neighbour to walk their dog so it is comfortable with strangers. It's not a working breed like it was kept for some form of security duty is it? Then, obviously your neighbour wouldn't want it too friendly but seriously, in a HDB flat? In any case, I still think training will do the job as to how the dog should/can behave. -

My small dog bark only once or twice when there are people at the door. For that I knock the living daylights out of her bcoz I think barking for unconfirmed danger is a nuisance.
Once I quarrel with my wife bcoz our dog barked and I wacked it non-stop until it SHIT and the legs went straight stiff for a few seconds.
Thne my wife says, one day a real crook comes and my dog dun even dare to fart for fear that I will wack her. How come I felt that she is right somehow... -

I make it a point to "greet" and get to know dogs living in homes close to friends, neighbours and relatives whom I visit regularly. This has worked for me very well and after the initial visits I don't get barked at anymore. In fact, I get greeted by wagging tails and happy faces. Sometimes it just takes alittle understanding, effort and graciousness for everyone to get along. The action taken doesn't have to be vicious or retaliative. I have friends who don't have children yet who complain that their neighbours don't know how to bring their children up - they allow their kids to scream at the top of their lungs, throw tantrums, shout at adults, throw food wrappers into their neighbour's houses, play noisily, push other kids at playgrounds and pee in public. When they read complaints about dogs in the newspapers, they wonder whom they can complain to about irresponsible parents and noisy children -
