hi goaler, i graduated last june... i managed to secure this interview with the help of a recruitment agency.... they told me the position is for commodities operations analyst..

think it is those common questions lor...
like:
1.do you have experience
2. what do u think u can contribute
3. what is your last drawn salary
along this lines lor..
anyway, i saw an article on interview before. It says that the interviewer already know whether to take u in a not, in the first 20 seconds. Believe it a not... yes.. in the first 20 seconds!
Cos u see... once they called u up for interview, they probably have already look thr your certs, resume etc, they already knew abt you, so, to them, you are qualified to be employed already...
but it is during the interview, he will see which is the candidate that is most impressive and outstanding among those he shortlisted...
so get ready, your polished shoes, ironed shirts and pants..
put on a good watch, wear a good pen. Maintain eye contact...
And, impress the interviewer...

i do not know whether u are in citigroup ops. or other departments...
but i was in Ops b4..now in Front Office..(Dealing Rm)
good to hear that u are getting out...
but there are a few points that u should think about...
MS is a good bank..but is OPs what u really want to do?
just for your info. OPs is a cost-centre...
u know what that is?
also OPs is not "safe"....banks are moving their OPs to cheaper locations - CHina & India...
u gotta think about your future in 3-5 years time...
if you are thinking of joining MS first..then intern transfer...
i can tell you honestly...u can forget it...
it is sooo very hard to move...esp. u have Ops exp in your resume.
i have tried b4..my team-mates have all tried..b4..sooo sooo hard...even if u have degrees from "TOP UNIs"...once u have OPs exp. in your resume...
u are "fucked"
just look around in jobs listing , newspaper...they are always looking for Ops staff...turnover is very high...
have u ever stop n wonder WHY?
the best part u can move into is Selling insurance / products/ RM / Bankers/ but you have Sales Target to meet..n if your can't hit it...bye bye...
for you to move into other departmetns Corp. Finance, M&A, trading / dealing...is almost impossible..unless u are really outstanding or you know the HEAD TRADER / DEALER...
but in any case, i wish you all the best!

yes..u can be doing Ops for the rest of your life...u can...if u want to...
your decision...
if you like your job - why not?
just work your way up slowly..n become the "HEAD"..
BUT...
Even the "Head of Ops" need to come to office around 9plus n work till past 9pm..almost everyday....day in day out...he looks soo dead...
while the Traders / dealers will be out partying after market closes...wif BIG FAT BONUS... -

but u think about it...if u are really GOOD in your department...do u think your BOSS will let u go? n move into another department ...esp..
Dealing / Treasury?
it is almost impossible to get in...demand is sooo high cos a lot of people want to get in...
if u are thinkin of joining the MA program...then askin to go into the dealing room...
u can also forget it...
chances are too low....no point wasting 2 years of your life..not knowing where u will be going...
it is like OCS ( army )...u go to cadet school ..but u dun know which uni you are assigned to... -

the experience you gain from the so-labelled "ops" can help you cross over to investment/trade roles in extra-banking firms. -
ya, 20 secs they can judge. no doubt. But, for big MNC, and prominent banks, normally the session will be either the whole day, where it involves group discussions or there will be several rounds of interviews. Haha, if they held a grp discussions, then better be prepare. very very stressful. i know it is very hard...cos i been through almost 2 years of Ops b4 i cross over to Dealing Room...
i really hated OPs ( from Day 1 - i just knew it..but still chose it..cos because it is the "best" way to get into dealing room...through "back door"...
either through "middle office / back office"...
i haf send out over 100 applications / emails...but only get around 5-7% replies...
i dun think i haf any problem wif my Resume / C.V. cos i get called up by Goldman Sachs , ML, CSB, UBS...but guess what they are offering me?
OPS AGAIN!!!!
so my best advice for you if you really do want to cross over to Front Office - esp Treasury / Dealing / Trading...
never give up...keep trying...pass your CMFAS exams...know your Technical Charts..inside out , market knowledge..n read many newspaper ( i read 5 different newspaper everyday - both local n overseas) n research articles...
citibank has the "online newspaper" - pacific n local news...

like what my ex-Chief Dealer told me...
