MRT and bus Fare increase again .......

Still remember the times when there's private bus and fares was based on the distances u travel..... miss the old good times when there more choices... too bad our good GOV took them away...
and make u pay pay..... SMRT & SBST are still Temask Holding .... which == gov .... its only taking money from the other pocket to another,,.... now is both pockets getting fatter ..... -

i think clone767 has brought up the pt that nobody wld be contented with what they earn... let alone these pple are so-called businessman... i would also wish the incumbent grp of pple making the decision for fare hikes be less profit-oriented, in the sense that the shareholders would stop demanding more profits so that we commuters can avoid hikes...
but, if they dun do it, and they wind their business up altogether, the next company to offer trpt svc may be even more unscrupulous...
so, as i have mentioned earlier, perhaps the companies should really justify their cause by using our hard-earned money to do smthing obvious to make our rides more pleasant, so that all of us would not feel that we are dumping our money into an abyss... -

thing is that, people are not satisfied with what they earn... they can go out and earn more.. but that is limited to their own abilities...
when a corporation like a transport company, which is basically a cartel in singapore, wants to gouge more money out of people, the people are helpless to stop them.. and those who are the most dependent on them, are those who can least afford the increases...
just how much is enough for a corporation?
a human being can be held back by his conscience, his sense of "i really have enough"... his family.. his own time...
a corporation has none of these.. they are answerable to no one except the bottom line...
i don't mind if the company is really unable to cope with the increases of expenses.. for it would be unreasonable to expect them to lose money..
but being a PUBLIC SERVICE, their reason for being is not to earn profits.. it is to serve the public...
a fare increase when SBST reported a $49million profit last year says different...
so... what is the justification of the price hike? is it just outright greed?

assume that the public trpt svc is really not entitled to make any kinda profit, who's going to pay for the maintainence of the buses and mrts? which company would want to delve into a business which makes no money?
public trpt is for the public to use, so all of us have the responsiblity to make our journey more pleasant... i agree that the profit is kinda huge, but i have also asked how much of the profit actually comes from commuters... if all the 49 million u mentioned comes from our pockets, all the noise we make truely deserves the gov's attention...

as for private companies, it kinda went to heck when the "call" for them to pick up the slack went out by the PTC..
the private companies answered resoundingly... but then, PTC hit them with an unreasonable condition of retro-fitting EVERY bus so that the doors of private buses would have the same width as the public buses!
the private companies could never do that.. so they forgot the whole thing as they recognised it as the BS that it was

i feel that we sometimes need to look at the bigger pic... assuming an avg person takes 4 rides a day... with the increment, lets take it as 5c, a person wld need to pay an addn of 20c/day, $6/mth, $72/yr... assuming again that a working adult works in the public sector, and gets a wage increment of $120/yr and not counting the bonuses that they get, i think an avg s'porean can still tahan the increment...
pple working in pte sector command even higher pay increment and bonuses.. so how can an avg s'porean not be able to afford public trpt...
however, i also know that there are families belonging to the lower-income grp, and my heart goes out to them... perhaps the gov/sbs/smrt can start a scheme to help these pple? juz like senior citizens/students get concessionary fares? -
as i always said do something! write a petition or feedback to the gov. den maybe they will start listening no point grumbling and sit back ..... i used to feedback here ... but i dunno if it still works try it.. www.feedback.gov.sg just a thought

Once the fares go up, they will never go down....the ruling party made us the promise during their last election that this will not happen, but they did not keep their word. Yes, there was SARS and there were tsunamis and there was the war in Iraq.....but having such disasters make it even more important that the ruling party help our lower income citizens (who have been hit hardest by mass retrenchments and wage cuts....which till now have not been restored unlike our ministers' salaries) by NOT RAISING PRICES. The correct thing to do should be LOWERING PRICES to help our heartland compatriots who slog daily to make ends meet.
But this issue is not just about money. It is about moral principles.
It is immoral to squeeze more $ out of the people when the transport company is making obscene profits amounting to millions.
It is immoral to waste so much money building grand structures (which are ultimately WHITE ELEPHANTS) but refusing to lay aside that same amount to help families in dire straits overcome poverty....the kind of poverty that (in one instance) ended tragically in a man being burnt to death in his flat because he was using oil lamps/candles due to his inability to pay the electric bills.
And it is immoral to break promises to the citizens who supported and trusted you.... -

Even for MRT single trip ticket, SMRT applied like this
Up to 3.2km: Up 10c
3.2-14.4km: Up 20c
14.4km and abv: Up 30c

Yet they allowed 10c up all level -

Since we the citizen dun have the power to stop this unnecessary increament n exploitation of money, we should help one another fellow singaporean, those got private transport pls help by tong pang ppl to places of destination when its on the way for them. Pls accept hitch a hike. Nobody can help us except ourselves n one another.
