my take is this:
our insecurities manifest in different ways:
for guys we think we're not earning enough money, not handsome, scrawny physique, etc. so we go do our best in our respective areas, e.g. try to earn more money, build more muscles, etc...
for gals, they go for ugly guys cos they figure that guys who are too desirable (and knows so) will always be susceptible to be lured away by other gals, so ugly guys are a safer bet.
But in all honest: god is fair; ugly guys usually have a heart of gold (not!) .

Hmm.. a very good example would be the HK star Gallen Lo and his wife.. his wife is so ordinary... my jaws dropped open wide when i saw her pic in the papers years back... but well~ that proves that not all better than average guys are superficial..
