This is really dumb. He clearly said he was STANDING on the bus. Yet, with your seemingly inability to read simple English, you jumped in and started accusing him of not giving up his seat....even went so far as to bravely chase for answers. So now, its our turn to chase for answers from you. Why did you ask him why he didn't give up his seat? the parenting, culture adopted in this country are the contributing factors as well...
Parents, in my opinion, are like CEO. they are the ones who ultimately responsible. But I think schools (like middle management) play an important roles as well especially peer pressure in the school. (my mom always told me that "i just have to see your school friends and I will know whether you will be good or bad").
if all your school friends don't give up seat to needy people, you will tend to do the same. If your school friends give seats and are polite, you will be one of them as well.

To those who think that people should always ask for seats, well, I think it is only courteous to offer the seat to people whom we feel needed it more than we do.
It it nothing embarrassing with doing good deeds. If you offer, but the person rejects, it doesn't matter. It's not going to kill you.
It is the lacking of initiative that is sad. I have a European friend commenting that the Singapore government treats Singaporean like children, because everywhere there are rules and reminders to tell people what to do. Lacking these, people are lost and not sure what is the right thing to do.
I don't think blaming the government or educational system will do anyone good. Ultimately, it is up to us to decide. If we cannot even decide for ourselves, then, there is reason for the government to be doing parenting work, because the people are not ready to think.
Anyway, just want to end the post by sharing something I discover, it is much easier to ask people for help when you offer help to others. -
lol.. how do you know they have top grades?.. if there are people like us who care for the elderly and the people that need the seat more.. then there definitely are people who are inconsiderate as well

no offence to the threadstarter but from the way u type your topic, i have a feeling that you put all the blame on the school.
anyway, those in the teaching line will know how hard it is to teach kids these days. As a private tutor for 2 years, i count myself lucky to have obedient students sometimes.
Please, stop blaming the school. -
I think the only mistake in this thread is the topic. I urge everyone else to read the whole thread before posting in, have a bigger picture before making any irresponsible comment. Start educating our younger generation NOW, being a role model is a good start.

I also feel tat here in this forum consists of quite a number of kids, hence pls read it too.... Young generation in my opinion is facing difficulty, beside the point stated by the thread starter. They also face the poor command of chinese, only know how to speak english, now LKY is urging family to teach n talk to their banana kid to speak chinese or else they will regret for life...

the reason i advocate waiting for pple to ask is just a simple reason of you not knowing the other person's need level even if it is obvious. and also there is a factor of pride where the person involved doesn't like pple to show pity on him/her. maybe its abit of kiasu syndrome where i feel that i will lose out if i just offer regardlessly but again who is the end is not selfish? -
IMHO, i feel that its the parents, the family who plays a greater part in developing their character.
there's a chinese saying, "er ru mu ran", which sorta means influence, to put it simply. if the parents teach their kids well, none of this problems would occur. parents are after all the ones who spend the most time with their kids.
as for the chinese problem, well, there are still teens who can speak chinese fairly well. -
overall, i think no one shld take responsibility for another's action. y do the parents or the sch have to be blamed when it's obviously the student's fault? seriously speaking, does the teaching of parents and teachers help to make one better? no, i'll say. if it's true, the whole world will be a better place. i believe almost every singaporeans child has been taught the right morals over and over and over again. but do they really practise it even they know of the right morals?

I have taken service 31 quite a number of times.. from Toa Payoh Interchange all the way to Tanah Merah...this bus passes by lots of secondary schools.. and if you just happen to be on board the bus at the wrong time....you'll have no peace for the whole journey...these kids just don't know how to behave themselves in public...they talk, scream and laugh very loudly.. as if the bus belongs to them...and surprisingly.. they're from those supposedly good secondary schools... -

Come on guys, if you're unhappy about the behaviour of some students, just target the behaviour of those students, not all students as a whole. It's only inevitable that there has to be black sheep in any organization, including schools. While I would agree to the notion that today's students are generally less well-behaved than in the past, it doesn't mean that all of them are.
Leave the schools out of it, shall we? If I were to place the schools of every young punk who has ever riled me on my target list then trust me, I would have a personal vendetta against many schools. For every young punk you meet there are plenty of good people. -

I have seen kids giving up their seats, and also have offered my seats many times.
I also have seen kids not giving up their seats, and have only not offered my seat when i was sleeping(didn't notice).
It doesn't mean a thing. But i do believe if they ask for a seat, i would have gladly given it to them.
Ask, and you will receive. -

I agree. almost everyone will give seats if he is asked.
But can't we just volunteer our seats?
