I can't help after seeing this thread. I think it's easy to push the blame to SCHOOL. What has the world coming to? The schools have to educate YOUR child, now also be responsible for the "UPBRINGING"? What about the roles of PARENTS?
Imho, I think the thread starter should have said something to the students at that point. Rather than bringing it up to the forum or blaming the school. Because the students probably won't read this forum and also probably won't care now. -

you are also right that school is not the only culprit but the entire teaching/culture nurtured in singapore should be blamed. for example, kiasu parenting.
i started this thread just to ask for opinions.
To my surprise, we actually have a few forumers thinking that giving up seat is not necessary. -
I hate it when you relate an incident and generalise youth based on a isolated incident, last week i saw a crazy old man whimpering to himself and moaning in "pain" in a cubicle and cursing in hokkein he opened the cubicle door and shout at everyone i could see his didi, finally he got arrested by policemen possibly for public disturbance this happened at Toa payoh intercharge Gents toilet Floor no1, so do i infer all old man/people are crazy and senile.
And if you are really such a civic-minded and good adult why didnt you give your seat instead
i expect to hear a comment like oh i forgot that i gave a seat to her and i did not state it

You offer a seat, they decline.You ask for a seat, they stare daggers at your face.You complain about these kids not giving up their seats, why not direct your ire to the adults who did not give up their seats and lament that the education system inthe 60s and 70s have produced such adults?
I don't think kids in the 80s and 90s gave up their seats too..it's just the normal "screw-the-world" attitude of a normal teenager.

I can't quite agree with this. I believe it boils down to lack of adequate parenting and mimicking peer behaviour. Proper social behaviour and basic courtesy appears to deteriorate with each generation. Many parents today either don't teach or don't have the time to teach their children what the right thing is that they should do. It really isn't for an elderly person or a pregnant woman to ask for a seat. lol .. jus a little twist from the topic .. oso bus 31 ..
i remembered when i was in temasek sec .. there was this stupid bus driver .. damn irritating .. like the road is his or the bus is his .. (in fact it was in his control ) .. the aRse hole would purposely stop the bus at least 5m ahead of the 1st flagger of the bus .. not onli tat .. he will shout n scold passengers boardin the bus .. if the bus is packed .. he might even hurl vuguraties to the passengers .. there was even once .. at the stop outside changi hospital .. with the over head brigde tat one .. the bus was packed .. n he opened the door to let somemore in .. so when the bus is full .. he cursed n sweared .. n jus drove off .. i was stunned as there were passengers still trying to board .. a group of sch gers .. were cut into 2 groups .. 1 boarded .. 1 still at the stop .. wtf is this lamer thinking or doing .. lol .. i still wonder if he is still servicing bus 31 .. haha old man .. -_- -

I was caught in such a situation before, but I had 3 ppl offering me their seats so I don't think Singaporeans are so selfish. and one more thing, if the foetus is like less than 3 mths, its not that bad... if it's like 7 mths? it might cause premature birth or in some rare cases, lose the baby..

well, one could say easily that "society is at fault"
but then, drill it down... what makes up a society?
it would be easy to blame the school for "not teaching the children".... but then, do think about this... what the heck are the schools supposed to do?
educate the child in readin', writin' and 'rithmatic.. right?
the behaviour of the child stems from the interaction between the child and the parents... so, chances are, if the parents are asshats, the child would probably be one too... the parents lead by example...
then there are times, like some examples quoted.. you do people a good turn, they treat you like you owed it to them... i've been there a few times... opening doors for people with stuff, giving up seats, generally helping.. but "rewarded" by stares as if i was some kinda maniac...
oh well...
if we are to succumb to the asshats out there.. maybe society isn't really to blame.. we would be.. for allowing "society" to get to us...
for in the end, we are personally responsible for our own actions... and parents are responsible for the upbringing of their children..
we make up society... and if we want our society to be a socially responsible one, we have to start from ourselves, and it doesn't matter if others are terrible.. just be good and responsible ourselves.. that would be a starting point

Some years ago, I was at LAX (Los Angeles Airport) on the way home.
I was at the airlines lounge and as usual, went to the loo before boarding. All the cubicles at that lounge level were fitted out for the handicapped. And I mean ALL....which meant that both normal and handicapped people could use any cubicle.
Happily, I stepped into the last available one. While I was in there, I heard this guy knocking on my door, thumping something on the ground to get my attention. I just ignored him.
When I finally emerged, I saw this Singaporean guy standing outside supported by his crutches (I know he was Singaporean because he flew back on the same flight as I....and spoke Singlish). I smiled at him as I walked past, but he gave me a very dirty look and stared at me. He must have felt that I had to rush out with my pants down, just because he was handicapped. Or maybe he thought that the toilet was only for the handicapped.
Anyway, I just ignored him and walked away. But that was one of the times when I felt no pity for a handicapped person. Even wished I could fuck his face up as good as I can.
But you know what? In the future, if I have to give up something (eg. my seat) for someone who needs it more than I, I will still gladly do it. Its because I do it to clear my own conscience....not because I love them or anything (geee, I don't even know them). It won't be my first time doing this kinda good deed anyway.
To me, its not about being considerate, holy, etc.....its about avoiding any guilty feelings myself (yes, its selfish, but it works).
Hmmmm....now after writing this I'm wondering.....if I don't care about being considerate towards others, then why should I feel guilty about not being considerate to them? What I'm saying is like LPPL leh....hey, maybe I do love them after all.

I think we ladies are a little more fortunate, or perhaps it's just that men are the more gracious Singaporean gender. When we thank the gentlemen for making way for us to get to the window seat, we usually get a nice smile in return
