What is the basic thing to do if you want to get marry ?

I got married recently. we had a dinner at a hotel. after deducting the ang paos, still ned to forkout a few Ks.
Wife and I come out with the money for the bridal and other expenses....
My family came out with the money to reno the flat. wife's family came out with $ for the liquir and wine...
So i guess i am lucky.... i didn't expect family to help but in the end they did.
So overall i exited the wedding without any debt... which is good. -
Well , if I am getting married. I don't think i want to spend that kind of money on banquet wedding dinner. I think just a simply dinner with my wife's side family and my mine because we are living in Singapore , very costly then the rest of the money can invest in the honeymoon.

first u have to consider the following things
what do u have to prepare for marriage?
1: family
2: house
3: wife/ husband
4: children
5: furniture
6: bills
7: upkeep that u have to give ur parents after u both get married
8: the income u have to give ur wife( if u are the guy) for monthly expenses
9: ur future children's expenses (education fees, diapers, medical fees)
10: car (mus have, if not run the risk of ur pregneant wife miscarriage, TouchWood!! and also to give ur parents a better life, cannot still squeeze in the public transport)
11: insurance (for whole family, car insurance, medic shield for parents etc)
12: wedding dinner: lowest rate is $500 PER TABLE, min: 30-35 tables on average based on my experience as a waiter helping with wedding dinner
13: hotel bill (if ur wedding dinner is held in a hotel couples tend to spend their first night in the hotel thus another bomb!!)
14: the red packet that b4 the marriage for u have to go to her house to get ur wife from her sisters ( at least a few thousands!! right??)
15: the hard liquor ( mus have in the wedding dinner)
before u get married or step into the walkway, ask urself, have to fullfilled all this.
if u have, congrats!!
thus u will have a good life ahead!!

1. family - what do you mean?
2. house - it's not expensive to get a hdb if people are not so choosy
3. wife/husband - you mean the relationship?
4. children - majority of couples don't plan for children after 1-2 years of marriage
5. furniture - you can just get the basics
6. bills - since bills are predictable, it easy to manage
7. upkeep for parents - nobody uses 'upkeep' with regards to this issue. i give my both pair of parents $800 each to support them in their old age. they usually give back $400 because they have their own savings and know we need the money.
8. income to wife - I have not heard of this in these days. It's very MCP to have the husband dictate the amount of money to give to his wife. Nowadays it's shared account, shared finances.
9. children expenses - people always boast that it's expensive to have children, in fact its not.
10. car - thats very poor reason you gave
11. insurance - it's not necessary to have any insurance at all. you can get 1 or 2 but you don't have to dump your entire income into paying the premiums.
12. dinner - some of us forgo the dinner
13. bill - the first night in the hotel is usually included in the package. you don't have to pay for that. in fact, some hotel offers 2 nights stay.
14. 'sister's' ang pow - nobody in the right mind will give them a ang pow of a thousand dollars.
15. hard liquor - not necessary. you can tell your guest to BYO and you just pay for corkage.
if i remember you correctly, you are one of those MLM'ers promoting yourself in the MLM thread. I hope your "solution" is not about selling magnectic mattress or bogus perfume from paris. -

Of course, with a flat, there is a factor of instability. But you can sign a contract for one year. They can't kick you out anyhow.
But I think too many of us, if not all, (incl myself) have been brainwashed that owning a flat is absolutely necessary. -

Yep I opt for no dinner too if both side parent don't mind. Rather spend more on honeymoon(maybe go japan or europe).

u can only buy stuff that is absolutely necessary otherwise they are just junk.
n it's no fun to move every once in a while cos it's very tiring physically n maybe take a toll on u emotionally...
over the past 2 years, i've moved a total of 4 times... n i hate it every time i moved. everytime i buy clothes, i'd hav to start thinkin which Top or bottom to throw away.. in the end, i stop buyin altogether..
furnitures? nah they'd get damaged during the move so why buy them? i keep my books in the cartons, dig them out only when i need them otherwise they stay inside.
in my room there's nth save for a bed frame, 2 mattress one for my sis, one for me n our cartons all over the place.most of the stuff are still in the cartons despite us livin there since march 1... n we're shifting again...
oh ya.. n u'd get attached to a place after some time.... and if u hv kids, its not good for them cos they have to make new frenz again, adapt to a new place again. sure they are adaptable, more than an adult actually.. but it will make them insecure.. to keep moving like this.
there are pros about movin around tho.. u get to live all over singapore
i've covered central, north and east.. save for west side of sg -
