Wedding planners take a hack from the neck onwards.Originally posted by moongster:You can find out from wedding planner on how much you need, etc.
Financial planner can help advise on planning for the future needs.
The most important thing is for both of you to be ready emotionally and mentally.
Well, wedding planners take care of the details of planning and arrangement for a wedding, so, it is fair to pay for their services, provided they do a good job. Of course, if I want to plan and do everything for my own, I will still ask them to find out what are the basic needs, no harm asking.Originally posted by foxwalk:Wedding planners take a hack from the neck onwards.
What's the big deal about this wedding dinner. It's like some kind of freakshow, where 70% of the guests pretend to be happy for the newly wed, while they don't even know their names except for the signboard at the entrance to the ballroom. (again, eerily similar to a freakshow a la who's performing tonight)
And 80% of the guests are thinking.. "that's another $100 I will never see again."
I do know some people want to have such dinners in a bid to make a quick buck out of their weddings.
Some parents want to celebrate their kids' joy with their friends and relatives. In this age and society of coldness, most honestly couldn't care less.
Actually having a bbq could be fun..not particularly delicious, but fun.Originally posted by elindra:1. Understand your financial situation
2. Break down your finances on what goes to pay for what
3. List down what is a need and what is a want. You can scrap the wants if you do not have enough money.
4. Understand the expectations of both families. The more traditional ones will insist on a traditional sit-down dinner which I personally find a total waste of time, and yes, like some kind of freak show event like what foxwalk said.
5. Also, both of you need to understand each other's expectation when living together. If you think you are going to argue over housework, be fair and work out a time-table or something.
Anyway for my hubby and me, we had a pretty lavish ROM to shut-up the old folks because I did not want to have a wedding dinner. (A pain in the neck especially for the seating arrangements) As well, I didn't think it is fun parading like some kind of exhibit and having to starve for the most of the night.
Therefore, we had it buffet style and it was free sitting. We had it in a hotel so it was not exactly what you will call cheap, but it was still within our budget.
Also, don't forget that besides the wedding and the flat, you will need cash for renovations and furnishing.

My in-laws and parents have no objections to it. In fact my parents think it is a waste of money and time to have a banquet dinnerOriginally posted by Deportivo:the banquet does not have to be a lavish event.
I had 30 tables at a hotel, only 10 tables were relative (5 for each family). the other 20 were old classmates and colleague. It was very low key - with no cake cutting, no toasting, no silly march-in. It was a great opportunity to catch up with friends.
If you have a set of understanding parents and in-laws that are comfortable with the idea of no banquet, you are very lucky. If not, it's better to cater to their desire in order not to create grudges even before the marriage (difficulties between wife and husband and in-laws).
You won't really appreciate it until you experienced it.
Foxy!! We have only been married for half a year and you want us to renew our vowsOriginally posted by foxwalk:Elindra, you want to renew your vows with your hubby?
indeed, you will save quite a lot without having to go through the organisation of the banquet. Not just in terms of money, but also time and effort.Originally posted by elindra:My in-laws and parents have no objections to it. The buffet style event in a hotel was more for my grandmother who was grumbling about protocols etc. For one they don't approve (not my parents but my relatives) that my hubby is not chinese and that I'm not following the 'traditional' customs.
As for my in-laws, they leave it up to us to do whatever we want. Anyway, our parents did not chip in any money at all, we paid everything on our own. Both of us felt that since it is our wedding, we should not be expecting our parents to pay a single cent.
We only had 13 tables (did not invite alot of ppl) and the whole affair was about 13k in total

Ooooo....you are reminding me of the agony of sourcing all the things required for the wedding....Originally posted by elindra:Yes indeed.
We tried to make it as personalised as possible. We designed our own wedding card etc as well as getting wedding favors from Bangkok (since I was there on a biz trip before wedding)
Haha it was really funny coz we got everything except for the hand bouquet which we bought when we came back (a week before wedding) and the best part was, we walked into a flowershop, saw a bouquet and ordered it.

that aside, sometimes i wonder how does it feel for those couple with big and wealthy family clan holding huge 100 tables feast. it must be awful.Originally posted by elindra:Ask your friends to help
My friends spared me the agony of getting the Guest book and the Ring pillow, but we got the rest of the decorations, favors, cards etc
Just let them know the theme and they know what to do. Ours was an indoor English garden theme. We got scented candles in the shape of flowers for the wedding favors
Usually, they engage a wedding planner, at least from what I have seen so farOriginally posted by Deportivo:that aside, sometimes i wonder how does it feel for those couple with big and wealthy family clan holding huge 100 tables feast. it must be awful.
