How to make up for the lost time wasted in NS?

actually only 6 months out of the 2 years are productive..the rest is just to slowly brainwash and indoctrinate you with their stupid ideology
why do you think they make you sing dumb songs and watch pointless videos showing how "powerful" those not-so-potent weapons are? -
on an individual level, NS is a waste of time. it sets your life back 2 years, gives you life long injuries and possibly even trauma and simply makes you lazy.
on a societal level, NS is NOT a waste of time. wayang as it may, a large well trained army is a large well trained army is a large well trained army. it contributes to the safety and stability of the country and region. gives you an extra bargaining chip during negotations with unreasonable neighbors, and can be used to help improve relationships with other countries. -
a small, highly efficient army can definately beat a large, medicore trained, unmotivated army(eg. when did the ns shit start?.. anyways.. army is for show.. we have an army to prevent other countries from invading us.. if we dont have an army other countries will invade us.. army etc is precaution.. i find it useful to the country.. and useless to the people in it.. is the army going to help you in your future? will you need to learn how to cock a rifle if you're a technician? do you need to keluar baris or besuright your noodles if you're going to be a hawker?.. and i believe that if singapore is going to be under attack.. we would just surrender and get help from other countries etc.. and what about reservice etc.. are we gonna send older people to the frontlines to die? sigh.. army is seriously weird.. we need Ns as much as we dont need it

I support the institution of NS.
But sometimes it is really a waste of time.Like what I mentioned in another thread,supposed to have standby at 1800h,we waited until 1930h before we were told it was postponed to the next day.
Then got another case,I doing range admin at Tekong.The range scheduled for next morning but we went there in the early afternoon the day before.Within 30 minutes,we set up everything.We wayang from around 2pm till the next day morning,sleeping in a training shed.Why can't they make us go there early in the morning instead? Luckily I brought something there to read. -

Ya,I agree with you about the part of disturbing the NSFs.My unit spec mess always got some regulars at the open air area.Whenever some lowly private walk past,the regulars will just shout "Oei,you come here." Try to pull rank on him,try to find fault with him eg his uniform,ask him some crappy questions in a very demeaning way"cb,where u from? Don't know how to greet superior is it?"then ask him to fuck off... -
my major did nothing always play golf with those big shots...all the sai pass to dy...still get promoted....

No, I was referring specifically to some of the young boys on this SG Forum. I wouldn't generalise all the men in Singapore based on the comments of a few guys on this forum because not every man in Singapore feels the same about NS. NS is wrongly marketed and overhyped currently.But the premise of learning a skill to defend your family and your home is an honourable one, just that NS is run in a very cocked- up manner. -
It's a pity our country is so small that we require NS for our military force.
In my opinion, not everyone is suitable to be a soldier. Yes you can train anyone to pick up a rifle and fight, but the term "soldier" requires much committment and passion. We all love our country, but not everyone loves it the same way. If I have a choice, I wouldn't do NS, being a solider is not the way I would like to serve my country, there are many other ways I could contribute and even more effective than just NS. -

I think that NS is a complete waste of time for me.No doubt that it is needed to help kids-brained adults to grow and learn what is maturity but we people who are matured should not be dragged down with them.
Experience is not something money can buy,you have to go through it to feel and fully understand.
As for the topic question,we male have not choice but just to suck it up and serve NS.Hence to fully maximise your time in NS,do something which you think will be of help to you in the future.Whether it is leadership qualities,first-aid,building up your body......etc.
Of course,most of the time vocations are not up to us to choose,so you just have to look at things from other perspectives.Basically,whatever vocation that is given to you,just think of ways how you can benefit from it. -
I am going to NS in September. I feel sick of this NS thing because i think it's a waste of 2 years of my life. But then again, i did not even have a choice to begin with. So wtf? Just go in there with a positive mind, finish up the 2 years and F*** off to Aussie to continue my education. But, IF, i say IF, when i am in the working world, and those regulars who f***ed me upside down, happen to work for me, or my friend(s), or whoever i know. I promise, i will make his life even worse than in the army as a lowly recruit.
The one thing i cannot stand is those regulars thinking they are very high ranked and can bully the recruits. Why? Recruits not given birth by a mother? I understand they are doing their job in commanding their men, but that doesn't give them the excuse to degrade the recruit like he wasn't given birth by a mother! Most regulars are just cowards who do not dare to go in the working world, so just sign on thinking it's a 'metal rice-bowl'. But after their contract finish and they decide to go into the working world. What are they? 40 year olds with no working experience? I just hope, i really do, that whoever make my life hell in the army, will end up taking orders from me next time when i go out to work. So i can make sure he regret what he did to me, or other recruits before.
Seriously, what army, navy, air-force. You guys really think that if a country decide to attack Sg, Sg can defend itself with its army? Personally i don't think so. For e.g. Just a spit from every citizen from our northen neighbours is enough to drown our country i think. (a joke blown out of proportion LOL) -
I did the folllowing in my 2.5 years NS.
1) Took a specialist diploma course. Landed me a job right after NS in a dotcom back in 2000
2) Passed Driving
3) Read tons of books
4) Did around 5 freelance web design projects. Earned more than a year in NS
5) Ate breakfast, lunch and dinner in the cookhouse. Saved almost everything.
6) Totally relax from more than 10 years of education.
