is it a must? --> depends on urself, family, future wife, etc. It's up to u all to decide!
How much an event like this cost? --> Depends on the no. of tables, table price, etc. Normal chinese dinner wedding, a table can cost from $300+ to more than $700+
unfortunately I am not a guy here...but here are my own experience.
Regards to the wedding dinner, alot depends on the culture or dialect that you are in. But alot also depends on the current society. There are some couples who still believe in "table-giving", while some couples just do away with it as regardless give table here or there...it will be the couple paying for the tables themselves.
My wedding (thankfully) was paid by my in-laws. 10 tables given to my family and remaining 4 tables (my side) was paid by my parents. i.e. the 14 tables' angpow goes to my family side. My in-laws believe alot on this (they are teochew).
Besides that, we also had the dowary, cakes, oranges, pigs' trotters, etc. Alot of stuff lah.
Initially my husband and I planned to pay for everything ourselves (but of course except for the dowary) but since my in-laws offered to pay...we happy lah! We saved the money lah...which we eventually used for other stuff!
But just the wedding dinner cost us almost $30k, dowary $5-7k, misc (wedding attair, tea ceremony, etc) $5-6k
Minus the returns (excluding the 14 tables my parents kept), I think overall cost my in-laws abt almost $20k deficit?
