Correct! Nowadays the watches are too main stream. Personal preference is Patek.... but it is way out of my range. well your dealer isn't wrong to recommend a Omega over a TAG Heuer.TAG heuer has soooo many ambassdors to pay off for their endorsement.But Omega also have some ambassdors too.but definitely less than TAG.However Omega trumiph card has always been their speedmaster range and watches with the coaxial movement.Originally posted by Pion:actually it was a dealer guy that told me about it. www.timezone.com this is one of the best websites for watches.they have forums from Breguet to Zenith.Anything under the sun abt watches are discussed there.lots of 1st timers went to read their forums for the watch they want to buy and gathered information before taking the plunge.
I think that buying a watch can be quite an interesting hobby.Reading up abt the watch, its history, the details, the movement within ..how they compare to other watches etc.It can be a fufiling experience as that watch is a testimony of your taste and character.
And leaving u this nice quote from the Patek Phillipe advertisments..

I own a Tag Classic 2000 series,a simple yet excellent watch.Imo a steal at it's retail price of $1100.I purchased it around 4 years ago,so I'm not too sure whether it's still available.
Those interested in getting one,get an export set.It's an original imported by a local retailer from a 3rd world country(Vietnam etc) where the watch makers price their watches lower as these countries have lower purchasing power.Such parallel imports are prohibited by the watch makers and penalties are imposed on local agents in these poor countries if they are caught.
So they discreetly export it out but each watch has it's own serial number.My Tag originated from Russia with a Russsian dealer's stamp on my int'l warranty.I bought it in S'pore at 30% off retail price.
The shop I purchased it from displays local sets but will sell u export sets if you go thru a recommendation by a person who knows them.Local agents actually do go around conducting "undercover" checks and report these shops to the pricipal in Switz or wherever to take action.
So when I sent in my Tag for servicing,they asked me where had purchased it from and I said it was a gift from a friend who visited Russia.They cant do anything and have to servie it as it's an int'l warranty.
For those interested in getting a luxury watch,ask around if anyone you know has access to export sets. -
My parents both own an Omega.Even they know that Tag purchases their mechanism from Omega.
But as an undergrad,a Tag is all i can afford at this moment.My ambition is to own a Patek one day.
I like their slogan"You simply don't purchase a Patek Phillipe,but look after if for the next generation". -
Btw Frank Muller watches look great don't they?
How are they in terms of quality and value(with respect to the price)?

Frank Muller is a pretty flamboyant watch maker. He along with Mr Parmigiani are independent makers. Frank Muller watches scream loud and has made quite a nice fashion statement especially among the ladies. If u like rectangle faced pieces, u can consider Parmigiani Fluerier. A master watch maker back in swiss, most famous for restoring Breguet's sympathique clock. His movements are designed inhouse and Chopard LUC range have some of his watch movements in them.
With regards to the Omega and TAG Heuer movements,which model watch does your parents own ? Should be the ETA/Valjoux range of calibres that even IWC and Panerai uses their ebauches -
phillipe patek is the shaolin wudang of the watch world leh... omega and the likes cannot be mentioned in the same breath lah...

Brings back memories,back in NS i was on good terms with a reular.We all know regulars dont make that much.This regular i knew was so passionate about watches that he'd save 70% of his monthly pay to buy watches.He ate little,hardly go out and did not have much of a social life as such.Watches were his life.
Of course,he couldn't spend 20k-30k on a watch.But he's save enough to but one in the 10k+ range.And he had about 20 by the time i left. -
For starters, the Tourbillion was invented 200 odd yrs back by A.L Breguet. So in an effort to maintain accuracy along these planes, Bregeut invented the tourbillion,where the escapement movement actually sits in this little cage called the tourbillion cage and its tuned to rotate once every 3 mins ( not very sure of the time diff) to cancel out the effects.the invention was patented and not very well used in watches due to the craftsmanship invovled in shaping the small cage and placing the entire escapment on the cage. therefore its almost the peak of a master watch maker to be able to create a tourbillion movement.
Back in 2003, Frank Muller stunned the world by releasing the Revolution 2 during the 2003 Basel Fair in Swiss.It was the 21st century tourbillion with 2 rotating axis both on the vertical and horizontal axis.
But since then ..almost every watch manfacturer claims a tourbillion watch as their crown jewels. Well for many of these companies, it certainly is a new age in horology, but many ppl in the industries are pretty sore at the piece of the tourbillion pie fasico. -

My passion abt watches started back in poly when i was browsing Sincere Watches in Taka with my fren. he was teaching me how to pronnouce those names like Jaeger, Panerai. Being a military junkie back then ..Sincere displayed their Panerai Luminor Series in a small corner, i recalled it was beside TAG Heuer then..i was reading abt the history behind the watches being used by the Italian Frogmen of WW2 ..from that momment..it sort of drilled in.
Well during the yrs ..i yearned to own another watch other than my TAG Heuer 2000 Series.Being a fan of products made in germany, i read upon this german tool watch company called Sinn ...and then researching further, i fell in love with one of the watch they offered, a Sinn 756 Series 1.Full of technolgy.ice harded steel casing, lube free pushers and gaskets. its interesting dial layout ...i didn't hesistate and took the plunge.
currently still studing overseas,once i secured my job this comingwks,i hope to see a deja vu of my Panerai on my wrist ..hehe -
