Students told to understand what Hitler had done

SINGAPORE : Education Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has said when it comes to history in schools, students need to know not just the facts but more importantly, its significance today.
He was responding to recent media reports about a group of teenage students who went camping and named their group Hitler while professing admiration for the man.
Mr Tharman was speaking to reporters at an Investiture Ceremony for some 1,770 teachers on Tuesday.
He said the way forward was not to have a kneejerk reaction to this, but to get the students to find out the facts behind what Hitler did, which is what the school is doing.
The Ministry will then use this as a learning experience for all schools.
Mr Tharman said: "They were clearly unaware of certain basic facts of history, particularly the fact that Hitler committed major crimes against humanity in his own society and against humanity at large and this was a crime of race, a racial crime.
"So it should be something that our students should be very sensitive to, particularly given how much emphasis we give to racial harmony and understanding how at any point in time in any part of the world, you can get wars of race within a society, we have got to be very sensitive.
"What is important is that we turn this into a leaning experience, this is what schools are for." - CNA/de -

No need to take these things too seriously. These kids are just having fun. If instead they call their group after after somebody nice like God or Thambi instead of Hitler, somebody else will kPKP also.

I remember when I was in sec school, we all watched Hitler's video....
Other than his "Heil Hitler" hand sign, we all noted how Hitler liked to adjust his hair by "pushing" his fringe behind.... -

what's wrong with hitler? either those kids are mini-nazis or they're downright poser kids who think its "cool" to idolise a psychopath..someone should bloody tell them hitler kills everybody that's non "aryan" which includes those nimwitts

history may be "changed" but the people who have been murdered.. real people.. flesh and blood.. paid with their lives.. they lost their lives because of his bigotry... are they to be forgotten?

Our history has been littered with murderous monsters. Attila the Hun, Ghengis Khan, Mao Ze Dong, Slobodan Milosevic, Saddam Hussein....the list is endless. It is unfortunate that people are lost along the way. Death simply is.
As long as we do not forget those lessons, those deaths will not have been in vain.

the latest and worse... makes it almost palatable... "ethnic cleansing"
whoever came up with that to make the news more palatable should be dragged to the ovens of the concentration camps and to experience first-hand the misery that was dished out by maniacs such as Pol Pot
