not sure about the exact history(always thought its not really that important, as in no real impact on my life) but i would say based on what he managed to do and the effects/influences he caused i would say he is pretty successful. if you want indication, he is still very much known and talked about in this age and time so long after his death, it is an indication of success even if the talk isn't positive.
anyway while what you say may be true regarding wrong decisions, when we set up a role model or something as a symbol we tend to take the best parts and not the whole. sort of like if say we take bill clinton as a model we prob wont include having sex affairs among others; we do not exactly emulate the symbol, sometimes only one or 2 attributes are taken, for example alot of pple say they wanna be like bill gates, it can be they only mean that they wanna be as rich as him( he was the richest man or somethign liek that).
