NKF Charity Show

"1900-112....", you hear this phrase over and over again. Almost every advertisement you hear the oh-so-familiar words. Celebrities cajoling viewers to pick up the phone and dial those numbers with touchy scenes of cancer patients voicing their grief and anguish against the battle with the disease. Alas, in the midst of the charity, how could one forget the most "important" thing? Yes, the prizes, be it a car, cash or other items, it seems that all these prizes are always there whenever NKF holds it's charity shows. As a matter of fact, the prizes gets bigger and fatter each time NKF airs the next charity show.
From yesterday's ST forum, a fellow reader mentioned that charity in this era no longer seems so innocence and pure. He even said that donating is akin to buy 4D. You "bet" a small sum of money in hopes of winning more. It seems that the focus of charity now is more on the luxurious prizes rather than the actual act of donating.
Of course, the above does not apply to everyone. I am sure there are some good samaritians who donate not because of the prizes but just because they want to help the needy. But seriously, do you really think without those prizes NKF is able to raise the amount of money need? Without those prizes or sponserships, do you NKF can survive to this day?
I feel that in the harsh reality, there is no free lunch. You want me to donate? Ok, I will, but I expect something in return. A chance to win $10,000 cash, a car, or even a simple voucher. What I am trying to say here is typical Singaporeans expect something back after giving out something. I think that what NKF is doing not really wrong.
So, fellow forumnites, what say you? -

but then, NKF is not affected by bad press and they are insisting on their charity shows every yr
if u donate, they are encouraged to do more shows next yr
if u dont donate, they will oso do more shows next yr -
why don't they just give all those prizes and prize money to the patients.

if u dont like that show .... u can switch off the TV and go out ..... no one stopping u -
those who wanna donate, pls take cash and visit the dialysis centres and hand them personally to the patients

I recall long, long time ago, I saw this "criticism" in ST. Something that a NKF employee said "we are given money, so we spent lor", something like that....
How they spends....beats me.... -
my friend's dad died of cancer last year. the medical bills totalled 200k. unbelievable!!!

Singapore's media should be liberalised. The TNP reporters should have better things to do than peeking at Bitchy people's blogs. A Daily Mirror-style scoop on the NKF will reveal lots of shocking info.

think before the media merger, ST did try to have a smear campaign against NKF but was unsuccessful... Rem last year where there were a lot of stories published about NKF??
But, eventually, ST and some of those they interviewed had to come out and apologise.. or else will be threatened with a lawsuit by NKF..

sigh.. what's there to uncover? they are raising more than $5mil each year for a handful of patients (abt 2000, i think..) Simple math will tell you how much is going into their "Admin" cost.. and i heard that the criteria for applying for grant is very very strict.
As for the prizes, if you regard NKF as a biz organisation, then they are just targetting different segments of the market... It may look ugly on Singapore's charity scene.. but at the end of the day, if they are able to raise more money by making NKF look like TOTO... then why not?
But after so many years.. my philosophy towards NKF is.. I wun donate to them, but i wun discourage others to donate either. cos there are ppl who sincerely believes in NKF.. discouraging them is bad for my karma. -
Remember TT Durai wanted gold taps in his bathroom at NKF building? I don't think the contractor who told ST about this matter was lying. If a tabloid reporter is allowed to infiltrate the Queen's security detail, the same should be allowed to happen with the case of NKF. Some TNP guy lands a job as an accounts clerk with NKF during their recruitment drive, using some photoshopped testimonials his editor supplied. He sees anything suspicious with the accounts and tips off his bosses @ TNP, and we get a juicy scoop. Unfortunately, this can only happen when Singapore's media laws are changed to follow those of the UK, as Iveco has mentioned in another post. -

will they bill the $5.80 to my bill or not...if like tt...tis NKF thingy really will make me fed up... -
I also received serveral SMSs about donation to NKF. Maybe NFK has pushed it abit over the limits. Who knows soon you will find people knocking on your house doors asking for donations. Oh well, but I like what FireIce said.

My CPF contribution by employer has been cut to 13% over the years compared to 20% or more previously.
I need to pay 5% GST now and not the previous 3%.
I need to pay 1 to 2% more for my public transportation.
Yet my take home pay don't rise as much.
Forever you will see, medical cost going to increase, some tax going to increase, ERP going to increase, blah blah blah. Even 1900 donation call charges by the telcom companies also become more expensive!
At the end of the day, do I still have money to donate? Hardly. I better start saving for my future $400k cancer bill first. It is better to rely on yourself. -
