the flags in this case are known as colors....their importance is historical. the reason for the guard behind the flagbearer is yes, in the event that the flagbearer falls, the guard must catch it. significance? in the olden days, wars were won once your color or flag was captured, unlike these days where its all fought on the diplomatic front. hence, the bearer and guard are to sacrifice their lives to guard the color. quite meaningless these days...but yeah...thats the military for u....

Oei, go get a clue before you open your big mouth lah. In the old days, when the flag is down means your army have lost. Keeping it up is a morale booster which tells you to keep fighting. That's why when you watch movies like the Patriot, whenever the flag holder gets killed (or when it falls on the ground)someone will rush over and try to keep it up. Plus when the flag falls on the ground, it can no longer be used. Must be burnt or destoryed. Cost money to replace the flags. If you look at it closely, those are very detailed flags and not cheap to make. -
