What r the differences between JPEG and GIF ?

any difference ? i cant differentiate any, except GIF takes up a smaller space (size). is GIF better or JPEG?

Uh uh - GIF has 256 colours, JPEG supports 16.7 million colours. Use GIF for animated images if you can't use vector-based animations.
GIFs can be set for transparency, i.e. the GIF background can take the colour of another image that's set behind it.
GIF supports interlacing, in which the image is first brought up as a low-res picture, and refined over a few passes. that said, Progressive JPEG can do the same thing. -

the main use of gif is because in the past, in those 56k or slower days, internet desingner use gif pictures because they are smaller in file size thus making them faster to load on websites.

btw for your information, GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format and JPEG stands for Joint Photographic/Picture Experts Group.

a 39.8kb JPEG file:
is 900kb on BMP format
is 906kb on GIF format
is 639kb on PNG format
why like that? on another JPEG photo (50kb), its GIF counterpart is only 10kb.

that is true. for example u open a picture using Paint, u do some modifications to it and u save it. the pic's quality will be deteriorated. what u can do is after modification, u copy the picture and paste it in another editing software and save it.Originally posted by 105090:oh.. so mainly is the colour..

The only way to prevent optimal losslessness during the process of editing and tweaking is to convert it(save as) default program edit format eg. PSD, AI.
Thereafter, try looking through various ways of compressing it.
