jpeg uses dct transform as the basis of its compression while gif uses lzw. jpeg will be good for images with more edges (more color change) while gif is good for image with largely identical colors like vector graphics.
also .. gif supports transparency while jpeg dun.
but then gif is patented, so png is slowly replacing gif.
it is not true that jpeg cannot move, there is motion jpeg nowadays?
