Yes, Lutheran is very similar. I used to think Protestants do away with all the statues. But Lutherans still have altars and crucifixes in their church premises. Talking about Anglican... It is the most interesting Protestant denomination and arouses curiosity of my Catholic friends and I.
Already we can see a lot of similiarities between St Andrew's Cathedral in Singapore and the various Catholic Churches.
In UK, it is so similar that my Irish nun friend walked into a Anglican Church one day when she was in London cuz she saw statues, confessional booths etc. But the Anglican Reverend was very kind and friendly. He told her that it was the Church of England and directed her to the nearest Catholic Church. -
from a neutral person's point of view the anglican church was founded because of 2 reasons: henry's refusal to allow the pope to meddle with his affiars, both national and private and the pope's thrist for control over england.Originally posted by laurence82:Big enuff. Why do you think Anglican beginning is funny?
Talking about Anglican... It is the most interesting Protestant denomination and arouses curiosity of my Catholic friends and I.

fyi i was from both a catholic school and baptist school... both of which forced me to attend their activities as with all students. but somehow the baptist doctrine seemed more logical and made more sense to me. just a personal view.

What I read about King Henry VIII was all very brief... mainly from encyclopedia.
It says that he wanted to divorce his wife but the Pope didn't allow. So he formed the Protestant Church and made himself the head of the church. Along the way, he beheaded some Catholic priests who disagreed with him.
This is what I learnt from the movie "Elizabeth": After his time, his successor was Queen Mary who was a staunch Catholic. She ordered to kill the Protestants. Not too long later, she died from illness and was succeeded by Queen Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth saw that the fights between both were endless. So one fine day, she decided to "merge" the two and called it the Church of England.

Talking about Americans, on contrary to what we mostly believe about them, they can be very religious.
I studied and grad from a Baptist University. The town that I stayed in was predominantly Protestants. To my surprise when I was there, every Sunday, by their local law, all the restaurants within certain radius from any church premise were not allowed to sell/serve alcoholic drinks. I thought that was a pretty interesting law. -

i like queen elizabeth the most in english history, who remain the strongest queen ever known in england, fought off advances from the european princes, but lure them enough to make them disunited with one another, fought off the spanish armada
interestingly, the stuarts period begun when elizabeth make james, king of scotland, the heir to the english throne, therefore known as james 1 of england, as repentance because she killed his mother, mary, queen of scots

All I remembered about protestant was that when my friend converted from a Buddhist (to escape some troubles she cannot deal with), she started to denounce her old friends. 3 of us was at her wedding as her "auntie" and we all know we lost her as a person/individual. She tried to tell us how good the religion was but we know she is the sort that is easy to convert and would believe in whatever twisted things people put up to her ... so my view of xtian is not very good all this time (I am always approached and told how I would head to hell and my parents will go with me) and then to lose a friend to religion.. To me this takes the cake. -

I thought that was a pretty interesting law. but i guess America's Christian values from which the nation was founded are still strong, especially amongst the anglo-saxon, dutch and northern german communities which make up the majority of the caucasian population. -
also another interesting fact that i found out was that the vatican once condemned the entire spanish netherlands which is today's netherlands to death for "heresy" . also another interestng fact, spain, italy and portugal had no non-catholics until reccent times probably 200? years ago? all the moors/muslims,protestants were all expelled, same thing with france where all the french protestants the hugenots? were driven out of the country to england or the new world, which probably accounts for the fact that many englishmen have french names like "aimes".

To be fair, Elizabeth executed her cousin very reluctantly...that's why she kept her imprisoned for so long. It was a difficult time to rule when you knew that a sizeable number of your nobles were catholic and leaned towards Mary, Queen of Scots, who was catholic. As Elizabeth was the virgin queen, it was quite clear that Mary of Scots would be the natural successor. I think Elizabeth was loathed to execute Mary, not for reasons of kinship, but it would be the equivalent of declaring war against Spain. With Mary dead, there was no chance of a catholic on the throne of England, something Philip of Spain (Mary Tudor's husband) wanted. Sure enough, the Spanish Armada came soon after..
Of course in the end, Elizabeth died without heir and the next in line to the throne was her cousin's son, James VI of Scotland, who succeeded as James I of England. Thus the crowns were united..
Incidentally, Henry VIII tried to divorce his wife Catherine of Aragon to marry Ann Bowelyn mainly because he wanted a male heir to consolidate his position. Unfortunately both women gave him daughters, Mary and Elizabeth Tudor. -
