go you!!Originally posted by MrBach:All of us are equal in the sense that we are each loved by God to one and the same degree; so that in dying for us upon the Cross, Christ can be said to have done something that he would have been willing to do for each of us individually.
Not all of us are endowed with the same gifts (or with any one gift to one and the same degree) but that doesn't mean that the use that a given person might have made of a gift which he might have been given (and assuming too that the gift in question can be supposed to have been given to him to some determinate degree), cannot be validly compared with the use that someone else may have made of a lesser gift or of the same gift to a lesser degree.
The point is basic: for if a person who has 2 dollars to begin with can be validly spoken of as having doubled his money (if he had used his 2 dollars in such a way as to make himself 2 dollars more), then obviously what he will have done in this regard can be said (in this sense) to have been the literal equivalent of what a millionaire should have done in turning 2 million dollars of his own money into 4 million dollars.
Whether we 'level the playing field' is therefore irrelevant to the question of whether God will value each of us to the same extent; and since the value of a human being resides in his identity as a person bearing God's own image, we can be sure therefore that God values each person as much as he values anyone else; by the same token, we can also be sure that our lack of 'gifts' will not make for a dimunition of our ultimate value.
To God, a child afflicted with Down's syndrome is every bit as precious as a child without this affliction; and the life of such a child must therefore be as strenuously defend as the life of any other.
This is Christianity; any poistion that detracts from what I have said here isn't Christianity.
This is the fundamental reason why the Catholic Church opposes abortion as a form of murder.

We aren't equal with each other in the sense of being identical to each other in every possible sense; in that sense we aren't 'created equal', as, for instance, two people who have different heights can't be said to be equal to each other in the matter of their respective heights.Originally posted by coffeeortea:no one was created equal
ahh, very well put. i guess it is up to oneself to decide how he or she wants to define their way of judging how equal man is whether in terms of features, characteristics etc. however, from the example you gave about difference in height, or even in anything else, wouldnt it impact the person's life, or even his goals. just like how someone wants to be good in basketball but is too short to meet the requirements. this might cause him/her to find interest somewhere else? making him a different person?Originally posted by MrBach:We aren't equal with each other in the sense of being identical to each other in every possible sense; in that sense we aren't 'created equal', as, for instance, two people who have different heights can't be said to be equal to each other in the matter of their respective heights.
However, does the fact that the aforesaid two people differ in the matter of their respective heights, suggest that their difference in height implicates a difference in value?
Christians answer this question in the negative and that is why they are able consistently to affirm that we are all 'created equal'.
Moreover, what if a person's height isn't essential to his being the individual that he is, so that his being shorter or taller would not lead to his being a different person?
And what if all our 'gifts' were features or attributes of ourselves in respect of which we could suffer change and yet find that our respective individualities should remain intact?
Wouldn't this mean (plausibly) that because a gift which you may have isn't essential to your being the person that you are, whatever value you may ultimately have, need not be supposed to derive from the fact that you should have at your disposal a certain determinate range of gifts?
Thus one can still be afflicted with Down's Syndrome and yet be 'created equal' with Mozart ( or at least as God would reckon it).
Finally, I'd like to point out that on the Christian view, one of the greatest of all creatures (a being certainly far superior to the 'most gifted' of human creatures) has, through the misuse of his gifts, become that enity whom Christians identify as the Devil.

It's true that if you value a career in basketball, then it will certainly disappoint you to find out that you are too short a person as to be able to stand a resonable chance of finding success for yourself by pursuing such a career.Originally posted by coffeeortea:ahh, very well put. i guess it is up to oneself to decide how he or she wants to define their way of judging how equal man is whether in terms of features, characteristics etc. however, from the example you gave about difference in height, or even in anything else, wouldnt it impact the person's life, or even his goals. just like how someone wants to be good in basketball but is too short to meet the requirements. this might cause him/her to find interest somewhere else? making him a different person?
everyone has interests and has something they do best. so i guess these "gifts" will shape and change people's lives.
wouldnt this sentence "no one is equal" be on more of a general term? whereas yours revolves around christianity? im not saying you're wrong, because you hold me in awe with most of your sensible posts

Neither can live while the other survives, for one must die in the hands of the other.Originally posted by ChingAlvin:Think about the simese( or how do u spell that?) twins who operated in singapore and only 1 survived. are they borned equal? do they have the chance to do even simple things we enjoy like sports? and when one has to die if they wanted to continue the separation, do they have a choice? compare them to normal human. hmmm but the only thing which is equal comparing them to us is that THEY LIVE THEIR LIFE TO THE FULLEST.
