My father's company intends to install surveillance software in the office network to track staff usage of computers, down to the last keystrokes. They are also planning to install surveillance camera in the name of security. The employees felt that their privacy is intruded. Do you think it should be implemented?

What organisation is your dad running? NSA? CIA? -
well it actually mean that the company will know if staff are performing work-related functions on their PCs during working hours, such as which web sites staff have visited, what emails they have written, whether they have downloaded MP3 songs or played games and etc...

Tell your dad if he wants to install such surveillance apps on his network, he might have to disable the anti virus apps he's using on the network.
If he has an administrator for this task, all he needs to do is to set some proxies, protocols and do some port directing. Should be enough to stop employees from accessing things he deems objectionable in productivity standards. I find the keystrokes thingie overkill. -

my father told me that they are going to sent a representative to speak to the management to recosider the implementation of this policy. but they have no ground to the arguement as the Privacy law of singapore does protect workers privacy in workplace.

I don't understand why they must do this. Can you imagine that the administrators can also see what the CEO is doing? The CEO must be someone who is open-minded. He doesn't mind letting the administrators what he is doing. Hehe.

its decisions like these which gets the workers all worked up.
seriously speaking, a good boss would go around mingling with the workers. not one who doesn't understand what's happening and implements whatever is deemed right by him. -

think about it. you're a worker, slogging your life away. but the best part about the job is that you get to send email, listen to music and download stuff. so you come to work, just do some work and the extra stuff keeps you happy.
but suddenly your boss takes all that for you, he wants to boost productivity. you're forced to work all the way, maybe you go talk to ur colleagues more to pass time. But the quirks are gone, you feel bored, you don't want to come to work anymore. You spend your time working a little and when you talk to your colleagues, you talk about how sucky the workplace is. You're monitored everywhere you go, you're monitored when you type anything on the keyboard.
How do you think you will feel?
Unless the staff are a-ok with the decision, productivity might increase, but now that the staff are sending a rep to discuss about this issue, they are not agreeable and should this still be implemented. It will affect the staff and productivity in the long run. -

Personally, I felt that it is a implementable policy.
Staffs morale will definitly drop, but it is reversible. It depends on how you work at it.
The success of the company is dependent on the cohesiveness and trusting between boss and workers BUT it must be governed by rules & regulations.

I don't think that it is a good idea. The company wants to do this maybe to prevent the police from coming. (You know, people downloading songs illegally.) But security cameras, they are bad. It is like you suspect that one or even more of your Malay workers are terrorists. Mebbe the representative shd just give the book 1984 to them and tell them, its just one step away from Big Brother.
Anyway any company which has to resort to this way to ensure productivity obviously shd be looking at proper HR policies, supervisory roles, and another areas. Incentive - not fear - should be what pushes employees. Why don't they just employ slave drivers with whips - that will REALLY ensure productivity!
It is also a big waste of resources - in order to ensure this system works, they need to employ people or use current resources to SCREEN what is being written - even if it is at random. THEN they need to implement disciplinary action. UNless they can ensure these steps will be carried out sufficiently - and that means a lot of extra man hours - then really its kind of stupid.
heheh Anyway hor.. uhh.. last time whenever I 'keng' at work... cos mostly I'll be using my mouse so if people keep hearing me type, obviously I'm not.. err working. Then I'll just use the disability keyboard which allows me to 'type' using a mouse. It's slow but... heee the survelliance software can't track mouse movements, can they?
(They can, however, track softwares being used)
