The attractions that stand out in SG include:
1. SENTOSA
2. ZOO
3. BIRD PARK
4. SHOPPING
5. FOOD
6. DISCOVERY CENTRE
7. SCIENCE CENTRE
8. HAW PAR VILLA (Closed down?)
We also have a theme park in downtown east, historical attractions in Thiam Hock Thian and Old Chinatown, a touch of the arts in Esplanade and occasional badminton championships that attract World class players.
Out of all these, perhaps the bulk of the revenue comes from food and shopping. And these are hardly enough to satisfy the govt, whose lack of of risk-taking and creativity in the past prevented SG from taking advantage of potential sponsers.
In F1 racing, the country could have generated significant revenue from ticket sales and constructor's sponsership. Instead, it ended up in sempang, Malaysia.
Now they choose to conservatively gloss over the socially controversial word 'casino' by calling it 'integrated resorts' in the hopes that it can kick-start a stagnent tourism industry.
They should focus more efforts in enhancing our image as a food and shopping paradise instead of just depending on the 'great SG sale'. By lowering rents and offering more 'pasa marlam' style (with higher standard then those red-white tentages of course) and invite celebrated chefs to show case their qualities. Throw in a section to cater to shoppers and you may have a tourism spree unparalleled in the region. This will not only attract foreigners but locals as well and build on our reputation of a food/shopping attraction internationally.
We've heard of theme parks. Why not have a similar concept with food and shopping? -

as for food, no one comes to singapore to eat la Singapore only self proclaimed what "mei shi tian tang" but actually my ass ah, all there is are like roti prata, what chicken rice, still dare to hao lian the food -

Think they should try building a Harry Potter theme park instead of the casino or cabaret. We need more family-oriented places.

hi guys, i travel alot... half of my time in a year is spent out of singapore.
I made my sincere comparision. Hong Kong is a better place to shop and eat compared to singapore. (this also comes from my collegues who also travel a lot)...
compared to taiwan, hong kong, korea, thailand, malaysia (Asia countries), singapore really has nothing much to offer. That's why i'm worried on singapore's future.
When I heard that singapore will built casino, i know thi is the life or death bet. let us hope it will work while macau is very much ahead of singapore in casino area.
I also heard that thailan proposed to build casinos. guys, if the entire regions are building casinos (e.g. in thailand, cambodia, indonesia-batam)... we all better keep your fingers crossed, expect another downturn economy for the next 10 years in singapore.
(note: this is part of the reason why property price doesn't go up while hong kong property price already higher than pre-1997 crisis level) -

As for hong kong being better than us in food and shopping...i tend to agree on the shopping side but definitely not on the food side. It's just better Chinese cuisine. In SG, we have a bit of other cuisines as well.
Anyway in HK it's just Dim Sum Dim Sum and....DIM SUM. Arg! Miss my road side beef tendon noodles.

It was the first, one and only last time. But now a few others : in China, Dubai and USA. When it first started, many countries came to Singapore to hire consultants from Singapore Zoo to help them start their own night animal parks. Those were the days when Bernard Harrison was the CEO. He was the guy who spearheaded Night Safari - he's a very clever and charismatic guy. The zoo let him resign is the zoo's loss. I dun see the current management come up with anything as creative and innovative. I can only see them getting more and more expensive. Eg. Friends of the Zoo single membership was $35 in last year.
