A better question to ask is; are maids HUMANS?
After having answered the above first question, you will find it easier to ask and answer the question of whether, the need one singular rest day in a week, or NOT.

Maids are human, we, too, are human.
We are responsible for our behaviour but we are penalised for the maid's irresponsible behaviour. My friend's maid elope with a bangladeshi worker and her $5,000 deposit (I think) was not refunded to her.
If the gahmen wants to make a day off a week compulsory, make the maids responsible for their behaviour, don't penalise the employers, period. -
i see them as normal employees...they shld work 8 hours a dae, OT if they want to, provided with OT pay... like normal workers, they can be scolded, but not physically abused, just like u dun see ur bosses beating u when u make mistakes. having boyfriends and large social circle is definitely not an issue... it's not ur bosses'/companies' problem when u have bf/gf. they are here to work, not as slaves... the freedom to socialise is basic human right

Not only for maid. Even for those foreign workers from India Bangladesh doing construction work in spore also employer lose the deposit if the worker run road. I think our gahmen is trying to make the employer responsible since you all employ them.
This topic has been brought up a few times in newspaper but I guess the gahmen view is you wan employ foreign worker you make sure you take care of them. A bit unfair to employers but that is how it works in spore

Aiyah all these maid problems all come from govt.If we are paid well, then only need one parent working to provide.We are paid 'peanuts' compared to those in developed countries like US, UK and even Australia.
Businessmen like to do business here coz we are cheap highly educated labour.Where else can you find in this region? Everytime there is a problem. we get pay cut and companies don't suffer strikes like in the US.
More and more highly educated ppl are migrating for fatter pay overseas.This won't be the trend if we are paid for our worth.
In short, it is not a maid poblem. -

What have the human rights organisations and ILO been fighting for?
Not only for the right to be employed, but also for having 1 or 2 days off per week and atleast 14 - 21 days of vacation in year and a labour day taking 8 hours. Laws should be passed on this, applying to maids same as to other employees. Humans can't work like machines, humans need rest.
Maids are not slaves nor machines. But they do the slave work for peanuts.
Just imagine you would be a maid. You sure know how you wouldn't like to be treated and how you would like to be treated.
Freedom is the basic human right. It's their right to do with their day off what they want, to spend it as they want. To go where they want, meet who they want. Or should Singapore get known for abusing human rights?
If they make troubles outside, they should take responsibility, be fired. This should make them learn from their own mistakes and don't get involved into troubles next time.
If the maids would be taken as members of the family, eat with the family, they would feel well in the employing family and wouldn't do any troubles.
