do maids deserve one holiday per week?

Though they're call Maids, at least give them respect, and not humiliating them, like totally?
If Singaporeans continue their snobbish "superior than thou" attitude, then well, God bless. One day these maids are gunna breakdown and goes on a mass killing rampage in the household. hahaha. -
I remember that Singapore was once labelled as a 'killing field' for maids.
That is of course an exaggeration, but not by much.
Singapore is a 'killing field' in the metaphorical sense.... a 'killing field' for the welfare and wellbeing of maids.

I have to ask this . How many of you here who keep saying give hols pay more do this do that , have a maid ? I used to think like you guys until i got a maid. Ya i agree my mom doesnt allow my maid to have short hair or watch tv. But we dont let her eat leftovers, we give her a room, although its really small. My mom always tell her to go sleep once its past 11 but she always say no must finish must finish. Sometimes she pretend to be folding clothes but is just sitting there resting we also close one eye.
I constantly joke with my maid and sometimes she also disturb me i dont know if she feels at home but she certainly looks happy working for us.although sometimes she carries a black face when shes tired.
So i ask is it the employers who mistreat them or they ownself wanna work like the case of my maid ?
And i do not agree in giving the maid a holiday . maybe once in awhile follow us out go shopping, or something or like what my mom does give my maid a few hours go out buy her own stuff once in awhile. But the thought that the maid will do bad things is what is causing some pple to not let their maids have hols.
I myself had bad experiences with maids.
I had 5 maids in total since about 8 yrs ago.
and one of them accused me of kicking and punching her and i promise you i did no such thing. She was questioned by the agency/police and admited she was lying. And when told to pack her bags and be sent home to indo, my mom realised some of our stuff missing so searched her bag. She took some clothes toys and jewely. Till nwo i still dunno y she wan steal clothes n toys.
My aunts maid is very rude to her, and even dare to command my aunt. And my aunt being a very timid/no brain lady dont dare to do anything.the maid act nice infront of her husband. Until one day her maid ran away.
My tutors maid stole her husbands money.
So you see if so many people around me have this kinda experiences , how can i not feel that my maid might turn bad after mixing with other not so good maids?
Its not that we don't treat them like human or feel we are superior its just that they so far have not gained our trust. At least thats how i feel. although i kinda trust the current maid of mine. -

Good or bad, they deserve the basic human right to have an off day. DUn tell if you are a lousier worker at your work place, ur boss has the right to say ur leave is lesser than the one who is better? I and my fellow colleagues who are at the same level at me has the same leave, same medical entitlement, same benefits etc regardless of our abilities or whether we are "bad" or "lousy". If you steal , hang out with bad company and show it in your workplace , its not only your leave that will be gone. You will be fired = )
As for maids , we dont let them go out for fear of them turning bad. Prevention is better then cure.
And let me give an example not that im discriminating or what but have you seen "ah bengs" doing good jobs or holding high positions ? even if so its that 1 in a million thing -

Lets put it this way...the maids are like children...new in a new place...alone and lonely...but locking them in,u think troubles are not going to come...i belive educate them than preventing...in the end of the day...educating the maids is still the best...
I mean come on...are u gonna let your maid only clean the house...whos gonna do the shopping...by letting them step out of the house,u are letting them face the bad and good of singapore...so why not educate them? so they will be smarter and happier working in singapore

To be frank, Singaporeans want to make the best of of their maids so that they can make the best out of the money they spent on their maids.E.g. sending maids to relatives houses, friend's house.

I think they are making use of the murder case to try to retain them at home so they can make full use of them and use it as an excuse for not coming out.

The Government should make a bigger action, like passing a law or whatever, or else it totally spoils the Singapore image.
The contract should also state the working hours, the day off, the time curfew for the day off etc. Basic rules.
I read a comprehension passage about maids working here in my English test (ok dun laugh) but it mentions a few important things
1) About the "Minimum Age Requirement" set by the garmen:
Most of the maids coming here are 18 years, sometimes a bit older or younger. However you must think: The older the maid does not always equal better maturity and hence better quality of work. Besides, in Indonesia, normally they get married at around 19.
Garmen wants older maids because they more matured, can settle down in new environment easier.
The maids pay to come here to work right? OK...
Usually the maid works in 2-year contracts. In order to cover the expenses used to come here (based on the peanut pay they get, like $300?), normally they have to work 2 contract cycles (4 years). In order to have profit, they have to work one more cycle, which is 6 years.
18 + 6 years = 24 years by the time they get back. This will make them become spinsters as they are simple too old to be married (based on the rural society there)
Therefore many maids come here already married. They work and send the money back to Indonesia.
2) Maids' day off.
Without contact with their families in Indonesia, they are totally cut off. Like if you go overseas, you will call your friends/relatives one right? Then? Same reaction with them, as they are also humans.
If you don't let them off, at least let them call their families. Even the Bangladesh workers who are building your Circle Line in rain and sun, gets to call their families back home.
3) Treatment of maids.
You got read the newspapers right? Then you should have read the article about some families with maids, nothing happen to them, but the families trat the maid like their own kin. Some treatment like:
a) Going out together
b) Eating together
c) Giving day off
d) Respect for them
e) Don't frequently scold them, instead patiently teaches them
See, these treatment tells the maid that you accept them into your family, and once she is settled down into her new environment, she will not be so stressed.

You see, if parents treat maid badly, their children most likely will also follow. They will set bad example for their children and thus may nurture their children to be torturer when they grow up.
So parents should give what the maid they hired deserved. Their children have eyes to see. -

when we used to have maids at home, my parents told them that they're welcome to go out once a week. just let them noe in advance so that they can arrange for our aunts to take care of us, or for dad to get the day off...

we use to go out together with the maids last time...
everytime dad brings us out, they'd go with us
and all of us eat the same stuff there is no such thing as my kids get to eat the best. u eat white rice only kinda bull..
and 1 of them was so close to us, she'd bring us out window shopping at the neighbourhood shopping mall...
