I think all rankings are somehow or another baised. You can never find a set of rankings that can truely reflect the quality of the university in question. Thus, we should never put too much faith in it.
While saying that, not everyone sees it that way, what about employers? I'm sure if they are to hire someone, they'll look for some kind of gauge that would identify the quality of the institution the perspective employee comes from.
Maybe some of the forumers who are in HR could enlighten us as to how employers actually look at individuals and the institutions they came from. This has been at the back of my mind for some time, trying to decide for myself which uni to go to, but those rankings are always giving me doubts, not on my part, but my employability in the future. Thanks. -

now what happened to the government's boasts about being "top 20" and pushing towards "top 10" when based on achievements we arent even in the top 100?
definately more reputable and accurate than the nonsense times of london ranking this one done by shanghai jiaotong university and the economist is based on achievements such as the number of nobel prize winners etc. -

Life is so busy for singaporean until we r not very well read n updated n hence the info we get r from local news which consists of a bit of propagenda n misleading. Aiyah basically because singapore is so closed ah and the news is all very controlled, the people all have minimal global view ah..
But the fact remains,at least within singapore, the best students get scholarships to go overseas unis,the 2nd best go local uni, the crap ones get their parents to send them overseas..
Personally don't think that the singapore education system in general is any good ah, the focus is highly on memory work and not critical thinking, even though they have been talking a lot about it. But i think as far as locals are concerned, at 6k a year, its a bloody cheap for a degree lah..so cannot complain so much bout the standards.. -

I think the point is quite clear. Singapore one of the first countries to change its syllabus for the O level. Why? 'cos cambridge too easy liao. Also, our students ace SATS (science and maths) quite easily. -

even if we are truly world class, will you rather stay here or go oxbridge on scholarship? can go holiday you know? the guys in NUS Exchange and Overseas Colleges enjoy themselves tremendously outside school holidaying. -

but if they look more at maths and science and engineering stuff, nus can rely upon its siao ginas from india and china. they come here thrash everybody. so power that the ang moh see them feel scared one. liddat then nus can rank very high.

You know why Singaporeans can ace SATS so well?Because the mug and spot questions..That is not critical thinking..
Anyways, i see mention of LHL..i was wondering wtf it was sia..when i realised, then i laughed a bit..but honestly ah..i have been told by some guys who have worked with him ah..they say that he is actually quite brilliant,supposedly can think very well on his feet..i don't know if the guy who told me is a sycophant, but i seriously think that LHL is a man of decent substance ah, i guess his dad's stature makes people second guess him though..most like unfairly ah... -
But high paid CEOs, presidents and all that may not be that great also mah..what about people like Durai, Chen Jiulin and L.Dennis Kozlowski? Would you want to rank their schools based on them? Maybe they were brilliant, but something went wrong somewhere? Their english no good cannot get them anywhere also.both written and spoken singaporena beat them even if have some Singlish....If a Ft student can be good at maths/science but if he cant converse or write properly in languages, tell me how is he going to survive in the real world. 2ndly the way they speak english quite funny with heavy indian/chinese tones. In the real world your success depends on how u interact verbally with people..I have worked with foreigners and cant stand the way they speak.
