now what happened to the government's boasts about being "top 20" and pushing towards "top 10" when based on achievements we arent even in the top 100?
definately more reputable and accurate than the nonsense times of london ranking this one done by shanghai jiaotong university and the economist is based on achievements such as the number of nobel prize winners etc.![]()

ya lor where the ministers send their children to ? not NUS or NTU. its show how "good" they areOriginally posted by fenixfire:Aiyah basically because singapore is so closed ah and the news is all very controlled, the people all have minimal global view ah..
But the fact remains,at least within singapore, the best students get scholarships to go overseas unis, the 2nd best go local uni, the crap ones get their parents to send them overseas..
Personally don't think that the singapore education system in general is any good ah, the focus is highly on memory work and not critical thinking, even though they have been talking a lot about it. But i think as far as locals are concerned, at 6k a year, its a bloody cheap for a degree lah..so cannot complain so much bout the standards..
nontheless LHL clinched one of the top positions for his batch in mathematics. This is enuff to show he is "got ink" one.Originally posted by vito_corleone:if your grandpa's a senator and your dad a president you're sure to land a spot anywhere, just look at our lhl.![]()
The education system is slowly changing. For history in sec.school .. it is high on memory work and critical thinking (source-based questions). That time the PSLE science also .. got many students came out crying.Originally posted by fenixfire:Personally don't think that the singapore education system in general is any good ah, the focus is highly on memory work and not critical thinking, even though they have been talking a lot about it. not true. Many people go overseas 'cos of the exposure; even if uni not so good their exposure there is what employers look out for.Originally posted by crazy monkey:ya lor where the ministers send their children to ? not NUS or NTU. its show how "good" they are![]()

I think the point is quite clear. Singapore one of the first countries to change its syllabus for the O level. Why? 'cos cambridge too easy liao. Also, our students ace SATS (science and maths) quite easily.
marker see the name lhl also scared.Originally posted by Icemoon:nontheless LHL clinched one of the top positions for his batch in mathematics. This is enuff to show he is "got ink" one.
You know why those kids came out crying?because the teachers and parents only know how to teach the kids to memorise like those cheena ppl!..when the neccessity to think comes, they cannot do it..they are crying because all they mugged for couldn't save them..Originally posted by Icemoon:The education system is slowly changing. But high paid CEOs, presidents and all that may not be that great also mah..what about people like Durai, Chen Jiulin and L.Dennis Kozlowski? Would you want to rank their schools based on them? Maybe they were brilliant, but something went wrong somewhere? Doesn't mean you receive a world class education from a world class institution means you're a world class integrity figure..Originally posted by leddy:The best way to rank universities is still by the outstanding students they produce, like those graduates who go on to become high paid CEOs, presidents, nobel prize winners and stuff - basically outstanding achievers... since there's no such things as O levels or A levels, the best way to rank unis is still by the outstanding students they produce. That may not be the most accurate but it's the best way.... that's how they have been ranking unis for so many years
but he got c6 for chinese?Originally posted by Icemoon:nontheless LHL clinched one of the top positions for his batch in mathematics. This is enuff to show he is "got ink" one.
Its something like chelsea FC buying all the talents in the fottball industryOriginally posted by crushedhearts:diff ranking systems based on diff criteria. maybe economist look at business stuff more. all biz schs in s'pore buay zai, even nus.. and also, the whole system and timetabling in nus is f**ed up.
but if they look more at maths and science and engineering stuff, nus can rely upon its siao ginas from india and china. they come here thrash everybody. so power that the ang moh see them feel scared one. liddat then nus can rank very high.
they come s'pore rather than US/UK maybe bcos their english no gd, or bcos s'pore society oso got chinese and indians.
This only shows our syllabus is way better than them. Look .. PSLE they mug also no use .. hahaOriginally posted by fenixfire:You know why those kids came out crying?because the teachers and parents only know how to teach the kids to memorise like those cheena ppl!..when the neccessity to think comes, they cannot do it..they are crying because all they mugged for couldn't save them..
You know why Singaporeans can ace SATS so well?Because the mug and spot questions..That is not critical thinking..
Their english no good cannot get them anywhere also.both written and spoken singaporena beat them even if have some Singlish....If a Ft student can be good at maths/science but if he cant converse or write properly in languages, tell me how is he going to survive in the real world.
