Talk about "creative" teaching....Tears over 'tough' math exam

EVEN before the ink had dried on the answer scripts, tears started flowing and complaints were made to the media yesterday about the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) paper on mathematics this year.
Consultant trainer S B Chan told Today that the paper was so tough, his daughter and his neighbour's daughter cried after handing in their answer scripts.
He said the questions asked were "different in their content" and "nothing close" to the standard of the school's prelim paper.
Two of the tougher sections also carried a heavy weightage of marks, according to the students.
Geylang Methodist's Gerald Lin and White Sands' Cherie Tan said that they had found the paper tough. Of her 35 classmates, only about five managed to finish the paper, Cherie said.
"It was difficult and I didn't have enough time. Many of my classmates didn't finish the paper on time and some of them cried," she said. "Some of the questions were not clear (in the way they were asked)."
But a primary school math teacher, who invigilated the exam yesterday, said she did not see any of the students from her school crying.
She said: "I didn't go through the whole paper, but I felt it was okay. But there were a few IQ-type of questions, not textbook-type of questions. The questions were not so direct and are not taught in school."Maybe they were not 'routine' questions, so the children didn't know what to do."
Wait till they come to uni man, if you can do every question, I kowtow to you.

That's the biggest problem with the SG educational system. It doesn't teach creative thinking or creative applications of theories, it only teaches how to memorize. So when faced with a question that can be solved by using a "normal" formula, SG students crack because they can't realize that the solution is the same as for another question in the book. Instead, they expect the exam questions to be the same as in the lectures.
Down with spoonfeeding! Time to use your brains for more than memorizing!!! -
I cant believe it, your children stupid also must complain, for FUcks sake its a primary school paper, how hard can it be? when I was in P6 I didnt even study everyday either play command and conquer red alert or go out to have fun with friends, and I still got A* for everything. your daughter cried? boo Fucking hoo, she is stupid.

Then when PSLE results comes out, some kid who came from China will top the cohort again....
And then when they get interviewed, they'll say "because the paper is easy...." -
Sian la...now complain then they will give them routine questions again...which wun even train their brain...
Next time tehy go to Uni they will be crying and whining oso...
So it is just a matter of time, whether you want to suffer when you are younger or when you are older -
let me guess, probably those questions like:
if ah beng has 3 more apples than ah seng, and both of them add together got 10 apples, how many apples they have altogether?

Pri 6 kids, most likely think of apples as a whole thing.
But then, in this question, you're talking about half an apple.
So, those who always think of apples as a whole get will stuck in this question.
In scientific terms, this is called a "mental set", ie, the tendency to rely on strategies that worked well with past similar situations. -

If this year's paper is too difficult for the students, MOE will adjust the grade accordingly.

Sad to say in Singapore, anything creative will be crushed by the one size fits all mentality of the people at the top.
I don't expect this to change anytime in the near future. -
Maybe the paper is not difficult, its just the kids who are stupid.

Maybe those kids realise that they don't need a PSLE cert to find work at the IR next time.
Just maybe.
