Actually the first thing I do when I buy a new HDD is to take it home straight and do a HDD scan.any problems I go back to the shop straight.so far only 1-to-1 exchange with the shop once...and 1 more time need to take back to manufacturer for repair.

so when u replace the ahdrdisk u brought your testing lappy or computer there tell them got prob and they connect it up to a comp and format no prob can use how? i dun know got shop assistant so good one to one exchange based on your "test". i tell u what, i go change one to one the shop assistant tell me go maxtor, seagate, samsung, hitachi, WD rep tell them bad and have it looked inito -

for me...no warranty=no buy.
testing procedure is nothing special...just do a scandisk with ur windows OS and see if there is any bad sectors or not...or if it can be detected by ur system in the first place....if U dont want to use the windows one...can use 3rd-party diagnostics tools like norton and etc...download.com got a lot of these programs.the main purpose is to make sure there are no bad sectors...or the number of bad sectors is within the range that U find acceptable...
In my experience with HDDs...either personal or at work...if the problem is really on ur HDD...there is no way it would work perfectly when U couldnt get it to work at home....PROVIDED that U installed it correctly and there is absolutely nothing wrong with ur own setup...removing ur WORKING HDD and replacing it with the new one and then test it is one way...but do take note that some HDD failure occur intermittently...difficult to detect...so there is always risk involved if there is no warranty.
well...if U really meet such a retailer...depends on ur quarrelling skill?...I havent met with such a situation before...I go back and change...they auto change for me...especially when I go back on the same day...so normally when I buy HDD....I make sure I have the whole day free...alternatively...there are always ways to make ur HDD non-workable

get drive get waranty go home plug in format check hdd capacity along the way (as an anser to the thread starter), install OS and mobo drivers gf drivers and it work normal and done at normal speed...hdd pass. external drives i not interested.
after a while within warranty period drive failure look for manufacturer -
